The bad luck ‘horse-shoe’ was turned right side up for Phelp’s Jerry Grasse Friday Night at Eagle River Speedway. For the first part of this season’s racing, the long-time WISSOTA Midwest Modified driver has been in the wrong place at the wrong time. That changed Friday Night when Grasse put his car in the Auto Value Victory Lane.

Earlier in the night, defending 3-time track champion Jesse Aho of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula had won the Heat race, with Grasse taking a fourth. However an altercation between Aho and Eagle River’s Tadd Schoonover in the Feature opened the door for Grasse. Rhinelander’s Dennis Mickelson went on to get a second in the Feature with fellow Eagle River racer, Guy Carley getting his best finish of the year, a third.

It was a ‘family affair’ in the Sprint classes, as it was the brother-sister act of Ty Springer and Tommi Jo Springer winning their respective Features. 12 year old Ty Springer showed the fans what the true meaning of a ‘young gun’ is by winning the Micro Sprint 600 feature. Ty is only two years displaced from racing his 17 horsepower Junior Sprint to running a 100+ horsepower, methanol-burning, 600 cc Honda motorcycle engine propelled Micro Sprint. Ty held off the driver that has been winning the past 3 weeks, Deerbrook’s Jake Reif. In the Micro Sprint 600 Heat it was a battle of 2 ‘young guns’ both moving up from the Junior Sprints only 2 years ago. That was Springer and Denver Larson of Shiocton. In the Heat it was Denver Larson beating Springer.

Ty’s younger sister, Tommi-Jo is following in her older brothers footsteps by holding off Lake Tomahawk’s Hunter Tingley and Phelp’s Dustin Kangas,in the Junior Sprint Feture. Conover’s Dayton Rein was unable to get his Junior Sprinter running for the feature.

Defending WISSOTA Street Stock Champion Jordan Kurtti of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula continues to be on a roll. Kurtti went into the night leading in the points, and he expanded his point lead by winning the feature. However his narrow point lead remains as he took a 4th in the Heat. Winning the heat was Tomahawk’s Derek Eberl. The class point battle remains tight between Kurtti and Tomahawk’s Nate Langberg. Langberg took a 3rd in the Feature and a 2nd in the Heat. Former Pure Stock Class Champion, Ryan Valeria of Eagle River had his best Feature finish of the year, takig a second.

If one thought that Tomahawk’s CJ Hedges, Jr., had wrapped up the Pure Stock points championship this early in the season. Think again. Eagle River’s David Blackberg won his first Pure Stock Feature the prior week, when Hedges was unable to get his car to the start. This week, Hedges won his Heat Race, as did Blackberg. That set up the battle on the legendary Tri-Oval between the two. When the checkered flag flew, it was Blackberg crossing the finish line first. Hedges took a second with Eagle River’s Dennis Lacrosse getting a third.

This coming Friday Night, June 26th, Eagle River Speedway is going to run a Micro Sprint 600 Special. This is the duo-winged Sprint Cars that hit speeds close to 100 MPH. The 41-year old track is going to have an increased purse to win, and expects to draw drivers from throughout the Upper Midwest. This feature showcases racers competing in Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, and Kawasaki powered Micro Sprit 600’s.

“When you put these high-speed Sprinters on the smooth, yet very challenging Tri-Oval, the fans are going to see some exciting racing,” commented Track Promoter, Kevin Dawson.

Pit’s and the Grandstands will open at 5:00, with Hot Laps to start at 7:00 pm Central Time.
