HAVEL HUSTLES TO IMCA STOCK CAR WIN / ENGEBREGTSEN GETS FIRST VICTORY
(Sturgeon Bay, WI) Sunday, June 14 2015 Results- Shawn Havel used a late race restart to snatch victory from Scott Reinhardt in the IMCA Stock Cars at Thunderhill Raceway. Other feature winners were Tyler Hackett (IMCA Modified), Vince Engebregtsen (IMCA Sport Mod), Marcus Moede (IMCA Hobby Stock) and James Dahlstrom (Street Stock). A total of 73 cars we on hand for the new night as well as a solid crowd.
Next Sunday, June 21 will feature the 2nd Annual Hall of Fame induction presented by Wicked Witch Enterprises. Racing starts at 5:30pm
Scott Reinhardt looked to be the man to beat as he grabbed the lead early in the IMCA Stock Car feature. The caution plagued event saw Bret Koehler and Dave Bouche lock horns which caused a multiple car wreck that ended the night for Dylan Heilmann and Troy Muench. Shawn Havel and Billy LeMieux applied steady pressure to Reinhardt as laps clicked away. Havel was relentless in his pursuit of the lead and with just 2 laps remaining in the shortened event Havel hustled his way past Reinhardt and took the win, his first of the season. LeMieux battled all race long to claim second, Koehler was third in his first visit, Reinhardt had to settle for fourth and Larry Karcz Jr. finished fifth after starting in row 6.
IMCA Sport Mod Rookie Vince Engebregtsen jumped from his front row spot to lead but several cautions kept him from establishing anything substantial as Bernie Reinhardt and Jarred VanLaanen gave chase. While chasing the leader Reinhardt encountered trouble sending his #11 in a spin. Reinhardt continued but was out of the running for the win. Late in the going point leader Chris Budzban emerged as a new challenger working the high groove. Despite cautions and several late race challenges Engebregtsen stayed calm and cool, leading flag to flag for his first career feature win. The win was even sweeter after having engine problems early in the week, as the team didn’t know if they’d even be racing. Budzban was second, VanLaanen third, Cody Rass fourth and Randy LeMieux Jr. was fifth.
The IMCA Hobby Stock feature winner basically came out of no where as Eric Micolichek paced the field until he was muscled out of the way by Travis LuMaye. Micolichek was sent reeling as LuMaye was black flagged for rough driving. Handing the lead over to Ford Malvitz, before LuMaye headed off he bobbled in turn four and sent Malvitz up the track allowing Marcus Moede to grab the top spot. Moede never let go to earn his 3rd feature win in a row. Malvitz brought home another strong finish with second, Dave Schmidt rallied late to place a solid third, Brandon Peterson made his return and brought home fourth. Micolichek was able to hold onto fifth.
Tyler Hackett was the man to beat in the IMCA Modifieds as he pulled out to a straight away advantage over Tyler DeBouche and Greg Gretz. DeBouche fought some chassis gremlins that ended his night. This allowed Todd Dart to flex his muscle and take second from Gretz. In the end no one had anything for Hackett as he cruised to his 2nd win in a row. Dart was second, Greg Gretz padded his point lead with third, former Wing Modified racer Randy Theys made his return to the open wheel division and placed fourth, while Al Gibson rounded out the top five.
Phil Faustini took the lead away from Jimmy Anderson on lap 2 and looked to be in control of the Street Stock feature until a mid-race caution wiped it all away. From then on James Dahlstrom began to pressure Faustini high and low. With 2 laps remaining Dahlstrom found a hole down and took the lead for good. The win was his 3rd of the season. Justin Mahlberg had a great run to place second, Erik Turner in his first appearance was third, Faustini placed fourth and Dennis “The Wrecker” Weidner completed the top five.
