The Prochnow Family Win at Red Cedar Speedway
on June 14, 2015 at 12:09 pmMenomonie, Wisconsin (June 12, 2015) beautiful weather and unbelievably good racing greeted race fans as DKS Construction and Rice Lake Speedway presented the WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, and Modifieds. The Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stocks and Value Implement Hornets were also in action but the Late Models were not on the card. Although the car count was down, the racing action was absolutely amazing, including a modified feature for the ages. Feature winners included Ashley Anderson, Jason Forehand, Travis Anderson, Mike Knudtson and Jason Havel.
The Tim’s Automotive Modifieds heat winner Ashley Anderson went on to sweep the night in what was the best race this writer has seen in a long time. The epic battle started with Steve Hallquist and Kerry Halopka leading them to green, but it was Kevin Adams who lead lap one. Ashley Anderson raced to second as Mike Anderson closed to challenge. Mike Anderson was able to wrestle second position as the top three cars drove into the night and waged an amazing fight for the lead. Adams frantically searched for the fastest way around the oval as Mike Anderson blasted the high side and took multiple attempts at diving low to take the lead. Adams held on to the point, but Mike Anderson was inching closer and closer to taking control as Ashley Anderson trailed very closely behind.
The three modified masters used every ounce of their abilities to put on an amazing show. Suddenly, Mike Anderson’s front tire hit the turn three wall as he had been driving precariously close. His car slapped the concrete hard and began to climb the wall. Somehow, Mike Anderson was able to save the car from a viscous crash and just as amazingly, Ashley Anderson was able to avoid running into him as he was running the same line. Adams continued to lead as Mike Anderson was able to limp the entire distance of the track to get off at the pit exit with a flat front tire. Ashley Anderson used the opportunity to scrape along the wall and begin to pass for the lead coming to the white flag but Adams fought back and with a failed slide job, pinned Ashley Anderson to the wall coming off turn four. There was heavy contact but neither driver lifted as they separated and continued to battle with Adams at the point. Ashley Anderson powered back to the lead on the backstretch and led the way to the checkers in an epic race which will be remembered by all who were there to witness it. Corey Williams finished a distant third as Jay Richardson and Kerry Halopka filled out the top five.
Two Johnson Motors Super Stocks heats were won by Jason Forehand and Lucas Plank. In the feature, Tony Falkner and Chad Gullixson paced the field and the first start attempt was scrapped as Ryan Bebeau spun in turn two. On the second attempt, Gunnar Watkins drove to the lead and on lap two, sixth starting Jason Forehand and eighth starting Mike Anderson had moved to second and third. A terrific race ensued as Watkins maintained the lead but was pressured heavily on the low side by Forehand. Anderson continued to stay in the mix as he sought an opening to advance. With two laps remaining, Forehand took advantage of lap traffic and in a veteran move, drove into the lead and on to the win. Watkins was able to fend off Anderson as they trio sped to the checkers. Jesse Redetzke finished fourth followed home by Plank.
The Southworth Chevrolet Midwest Modifieds had three heats with Michael Truscott, Antonio Pintaro, and Travis Anderson scored as winners. Pintaro sat on the pole with Ben Schultz for the start of the feature as two attempts to begin were aborted with the second including a backstretch crash which eliminated Mitchell Booth. When the race did start, Schultz took the lead on lap one as Anderson moved to the high groove and closed. On lap two, Anderson drove to the lead and was followed by Shane Halopka and Truscott. Truscott moved to second on the low side and took the lead on lap seven in turn four on a clean slider. The yellow flag flew for a spinning Doug Carlson, restoring Anderson to the lead. However, Truscott passed for the point on the restart but Anderson moved up even higher to the ultra-high line and swept back into the lead. Another yellow slowed the intense action as Robbie Johnson spun in turn two. Anderson was too strong though as he found his way back to the wall the entire distance around the track and went on to score an exciting victory. Halopka got past Truscott in the late going as Nick Koehler and Dave Shackleton rounded out the top five.
Cody Kummer won the single Conrad’s Auto Salvage Street Stock heat as Mike Knudtson started the feature outside pole sitter Ashley Wahlstrom. Knudtson immediately took the lead as Kummer closed to challenge. The race continued with Kummer trying to get below Knudtson for the lead and the two racing side by side several times. Knudtson proved too strong as he drove home to the victory over Kummer and Hunter VanGilder made a last lap pass over Wahlstrom for third. Adam Soltis was the fifth place finisher.
The Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stock heat winner was Jesse Bryan as Mike Grover and Jeff Tisdale filled out the front row of the feature. On the second attempt for a start Jason Havel led Grover by inches after the first lap. Bryan raced to second and set off to chase down the leader. As Hovel maintained his lead and eventually began to stretch it to the checkered flag, Bryan ran a comfortable second. A several lap race ensued for third as Kent Harmon eventually took the position over Grover and Tisdale finished fifth.
The Value Implement Hornets heats were won by Jeremy Johnson and Jesse Tripp. At the start of the feature, William Voeltz immediately made it three wide for the lead and secured the point at the end of the first lap. Eighth starting Johnson quickly closed to take the lead on the backstretch in lap two but Voeltz fight back and regained the point. One lap later, Johnson edged to the front in a side by side battle for the lead. Voeltz remained close but began to fade with two laps remaining as Johnson drove home to his eighth feature win of the season. Voeltz finished second, as Bradley York raced to third over Derrick Johnson and Jess Seim.
Red Cedar Speedway returns to racing action on Friday, June 19, 2015 with a fund raising night with all monies going to the “3-day at the Races” benefitting the Susan G Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The WISSOTA Poly Dome Dirt Track Series sanctioned Street Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Super Stocks, Modifieds, and Late Models, along with the Kadinger Auto Salvage Pure Stocks and Value Implement Hornets will be in action.
