A Night of Shockers at Eagle River Speedway
It was a night of the ‘underdog’ at Eagle River Speedway Friday Night! One racer won his first ever Feature, another came from the back of the pack to win on the final turn of the race, and the driver that had a long winning streak going, didn’t even make it to the starting line.
Ashland’s Tyler Vernon made his second trip to the challenging Tri-Oval worthwhile. Vernon won his first feature in his racing career. To get that memorable win he had to beat the driver that has claimed the Track Championship the last three years, Jesse Aho of Michigan’ s Upper Peninsula.
The most exciting race of the night happened in the Pure Stock Feature. Phelps Ron Drake led from the start to the final turn of the final lap. That is when Drake lost control of his car on the hair-pin third turn. When Drake spun out, that forced Dennis LaCrosse and Don Scharf to make evasive moves to miss Drake While LaCrosse and Scharf moved to miss Drake, Eagle River’s David Blackberg snuck in on the outside and dashed to the finish line.
Blackberg had to go to the back of the pack midway through the race due to an altercation. As he worked his way through the pack, he came upon the battle between Drake, LaCrosse, and Scharf.
Drake did win his Heat Race by holding off last week’s Pure Stock Feature winner, Dennis LaCrosse.
Going into the night, Tomahawk’s CJ Hedges had been undefeated throughout this year and going all the way back to last year. Hedges swept through the field to win the Heat. However he was unable to get his car to the starting line for the feature.
While Vernon and Blackberg were the surprise winners of the night. The defending WISSOTA Street Stock Champion, Jordan Kurtti of Bruce Crossing, Michigan, held serve by winning his feature. It was in the Heat Race that Eagle River’s Ryan Glembin thrilled the fans by making many moves to work his way through traffic. When Nate Langberg went wide in the button-hook third turn, Glembin squeezed by on the inside to get the lead and the win.
Another exciting Heat took place in the Micro Sprint 600’s. Jake Reif made a sling shot move at over 80 MPH to get by his father Jerry. Jake not only won the heat but held off the hard charging 14 year old from Shiocton, Denver Larson, to win the Feature.
Tommi Jo Springer swept both the Feature an the Heat in the Junior Sprints.
Exciting Stock Car Racing returns to Eagle River Speedway this coming Friday Night. Hot Laps at 7 pm CT, Racing to start at 7:30 pm CT.
