Last Lap Pass Nets Anvelink Second Straight Victory
on May 24, 2015 at 11:12 amShawano,WI 5/23/15—Nick Anvelink passed Brett Swedberg on the final lap to win his second straight and third overall feature of the season. Travis VanStraten scored his third consecutive win this season, Calvin Stueck won his second in a row, while Eddie Muenster and Jason Jach each picked up there first wins on the year.
Looking to turn around his season long bad luck, Brett Swedberg took the lead at the start of the Late Model feature. Entering the night Swedberg had yet to finish a feature race. Rob Krull and Jeff Curtin chased Swedberg through the early stages of the race while Nick Anvelink began to work his way forward from his ninth place starting position. Anvelink passed Curtin and Krull on lap 9 to move to second behind Swedberg. Swedberg had put some distance between himself and Anvelink as the pair approached lapped traffic. At lap 20 Anvelink had raced to within a few car lengths of Swedberg, as they deftly began to work through lapped traffic, a game of high speed cat and mouse began. Anvelink showed the nose of his car to Swedberg on multiple occasions with Swedberg able to accelerate ahead of Anvelink. After the pair took the white flag they entered turn one with Anvelink glued to the back bumper of Swedberg. They cleared a lapped car in turn two and took off down the back straight. They then entered turn three side by side with Anvelink to the inside of Swedberg. Both drivers pushed their cars to the limit in turn four with Swedberg actually brushing the wall as they came out of turn four and headed towards the checkered flag. Anvelink found the bite and was able to beat Swedberg to the line for the win. Ron Berna took third in the race.
Shawn Frelich led the opening lap of the IMCA Modified feature before Kevin Feck grabbed the lead on lap 2. Eddie Muenster quickly began to pressure Feck for the lead with Mark Weisnicht racing his way to third. Caution slowed the field on lap 6. The race struggled to get going again as multiple caution s plagued a lap 7 restart. Once the race went green again Eddie Muenster was able to pass Feck to take the lead. Jason Cazarapata then moved to second on the track. The race was cut short due to time constraints with Muenster holding off a hard charging Czarapata on the final lap for his first win of the year. Weisnicht finished third.
Gary Kasperek led the first 2 laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature before the yellow flag came out after a melee in turn three. Trent Nolan powered passed Kasperek for the lead on lap 3, while Mike Schmidt raced to second. Schmidt took the lead from Nolan on lap 8 after Nolan slipped high in turn number two. Shawn Wagner followed Schmidt passed Nolan and began to pester Schmidt for the lead. A caution after lap 9 bunched the field back up. On the restart it was Brandon Czarapata that snuck past Schmidt and Wagner to move into first. On lap 12 it was Czarapata running first, Wagner in second, and Travis VanStraten in third. VanStraten cracked the win on lap 13 and passed both Czarapata and Wagner to grab the lead. Czarapata and Wagner continued to pursue, but VanStraten was not to be denied the win. It was the fourth win of the year for VanStraten.
The IMCA Sport Mod feature got off to a rough start as an incident at the drop off the green flag collected a number of cars. Once the track was cleared an the lineup was reset rookie Kyle Raddant led the opening lap before Tracy Wassenberg snuck inside of Raddant to take the lead. Wassenberg would hold the lead through lap 6 before being overtaken by Jason Jach on lap 7. Jach was able to fend off Wassenberg for the rest of the race on the way to his first win of the season. Wassenberg crossed the line in second ahead of Jordan Bartz.
The Mighty Four drivers ran a clean caution free race to round out the night. Josh Slewinski led the first 2 laps before last weeks winner Calvin Stueck took over the point position. Stueck led for the duration of the race on his way to victory lane. Slewinski finished second. Lucas Hacker finished strong third.
Racing continues next Saturday night with Spectator Eliminators back on the docket. Racing starts at 6:30. More information can be found at www.shawanospeedway.net.
