Exciting finishes at Eagle River Speedway
on May 23, 2015 at 8:52 amThey say Memorial Day weekend is the un-official start of summer. IF the action at Eagle River Speedway on Friday night is any indicator, it’s going to be a hot summer.
The first 3 features of the night went right down to the final laps, and 2 of the winners got the lead on the final lap.
In the Junior Sprint Feature, Tommie Jo Springer led for the entire race, that is until the final turn on the final lap when Springer lost control of her car and Hunter Tingley passed her for his first feature win. Tingley was right on Springer’s tail throughout the race.
Things really got hot in the Micro Sprint 600 Feature. A little too hot, when Jake Reif blew an engine, and his Motorcycle engine propelled Micro Sprint started on fire Jake Reif worked his way to take the lead from his father midway through the race and looked like he was on his way to another win. Reif was undefeated in the class entering the feature.
After Jake Reif’s car was towed from the track that left the race wide open between Jerry Reif, Jered Cech, Escanaba, Michigan’s Matt Peterson, Rhinelander’s Jake Schilleman and Eagle River’s Ty Springer. It was on the final lap, and just like the Junior Sprint Feature, the leader was passed. Jered Cech passed Jerry Reif for the win.
When you thought the excitement for the night was over, here comes the WISSOTA Street Stock Feature. Just like the first 3 features it looked like the driver that jumped out to an early lead would go o to cruise to the Auto Value Victory Lane Bruce Crossing, Michigan’s Jordan Kurtti led for the first 17 of the 20 lap feature. During those 17 laps, Eagle River’s, Ryan Glembin worked his way through the field, and eventually got right on the bumper of Kurtti. Then on the 17th lap, the two connected in the button-hook third turn.
After the officials deliberated, the re-start had Kurtti on the pole, followed by Glembin, Britt Bromann, Nate Langberg, and the rest of the field. When the checkered flag flew, Kurtti got the win.
The WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature looked to be a battle between Northern Wisconsin drivers and Western UP of Michigan Drivers. Representing the UP was Jesse Aho, George Truscott, Dennis Baldwin, and George Truscott. Leading the way for Northern Wisconsin was Eagle River’s Tadd Schoonover, and Jonathon Miller, along with Hurley’s John Kallas.
The tracks defending WISSOTA Midwest Modified Champion for the last 3 years, Jesse Aho of Toivola, held off fellow “Yooper” George Truscott for the win.
Tomahawk’s CJ Hedges, Jr., continues to dominate in the Pure Stock Class. Although Eagle River’s Don Scharf and David Blackberg are narrowing the gap. Hedges victory in the Pure Stock Feature was closer than many expected.
Racing returns to the challenging one third mile tri-oval this coming Friday Night. Eagle River Speedway is going to give spectators the chance to race on a one on one basis It will be Redneck games, Part one. Contact Eagle River Speedway for all the details.
