‘15 Racing Season Begins Saturday at ABC
on May 18, 2015 at 4:46 pmAshland, WI — The ABC Raceway will kick off its 2015 stock car racing season with the first of 14 scheduled Saturday nights of regular-season action on May 23, to be presented by the Northern State Bank.
The popular racing venue located just south of Ashland will once again be home to WISSOTA-sanctioned Modifieds, Super Stocks and Midwest Mods, as well as the track’s own Six-Cylinders and Pure Stocks, for exciting heat-race and feature action on the semi-banked three-eighths-mile red-clay oval.
Over 900 yards of new clay have been added to the racing surface since last year’s season-finale Red Clay Classic. Track crews have spent the past two months working the clay into the existing base and reshaping the track in an effort to improve the racing “groove” and prepare another very competitive surface.
Improvements to on-track safety have also been key targets for the Ashland-Bayfield County Racing Association to concentrate on for the upcoming season, with the addition of safety lighting for the drivers and protective gear for the on-track workers.
For the drivers, the Raceway has been working on modifications to the season-long points fund with the intention of offering more post-season earnings to more drivers. And the new pavilion and plans to enhance the concession stand’s menu offerings – as well as a concerted effort to run a fast-paced, action-packed race program – will help make the fan experience more enjoyable.
Ashland’s Steve Stuart, Tiffany Hudack and Matt Deragon are all expected to return to action this summer in the hopes of defending their respective Modified, Six-Cylinder and Pure Stock titles of 2014. Also returning will be Scott Lawrence of Superior, who will try to extend his incredible string of consecutive Super Stock points championships at ABC to 12.
Whether Mike Truscott of Chippewa Falls returns to race full-time in Ashland in defense of his 2014 Mid-Mod crown this coming summer is unclear, which could leave the door open for a number of strong contenders to take that title.
Opening-night hot laps begin at 6:15 pm, and the first green flag of the season is scheduled to be thrown at 7. Adult tickets are still just $10 each, and kids ages 12 and under are admitted free when accompanied by a paying adult.
“Race Night” will return as the Northland’s only live pre-race radio program Saturday on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, from 4:30-6 pm with up-to-date track news and weather information.
The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com.
