After almost two years, Stock Car racing returned to the one-third mile high banked TNT Motor Speedway, just south of Three Lakes on Saturday Night. The season started with a car rolling over 3 times and finishing the race. Another race had the two leaders colliding on the final lap at the finish line. All this was in Heat races!

It was during the 4-Cyllinder Stinger Heat that Charlie Gross got bumped while sliding sideways between the 3rd and 4th turn. Gross’s car rolled over 3 times, ended up on it’s wheels. Since the car ended up on the right side, Gross just re-started the car and finished the race. Merrill’s Louis Malluege won the heat and went on to win the Feature.

It was in the Pro Truck Heat race that John Johnson, Sr of Lac Du Flambeau and James Koga were in a tight battle for the lead throughout the race. Then with the two side by side going to the finish line of the final lap, they hit each other. One truck slid across the finish line and the other did not. Koga got the win.

However in the Pro Truck Feature Koga looked to be cruising along on his way to the NAPA Victory Lane. That is until the 12th lap, when Cory Allen took the low side exiting the 2nd corner, while Koga was in the middle of the track. Allen of Rhinelander got the win.

In the WISSOTA Midwest Modified Feature, George Truscott of Greenland, Michigan, jumped out to an early lead. While 10 other cars were fighting it out in traffic, Truscott continued to build his lead. When Jonathon Miller, Tad Schoonover, and Guy Carley got tangled up together in the 1st turn, the caution came out with 7 laps to go.

On the re-start, Jerry Grasse of Phelps got the lead, with the Upper Peninsula’s Jesse Aho on his bumper. Grasse went on to win the Feature. Rhinelander’s Dan Melton won the first Heat and Aho won the second heat.

The WISSOTA Street Stock Class looked like Tomahawk’s Nate Langberg’s class. Langberg ran away from the pack in the Heat race, and looked to be the one to beat in the Feature. Bruce Crossing, Michigan’s, Jordan Kurtti quickly reminded the fans that ‘he’ is the driver to beat in the class. Kurtti quickly passed Langberg in the 2nd lap to take a lead. A lead he would not relinquish.

While most of the classes showed how close the competition is going to be, it Is in the Pure Stock Class that one driver does look to be the clear favorite. That is Rhinelander’s Tyler Lundberg. Lundberg battled through traffic to win his Heat and held off the hard charging of Herb Dettman and David Blackberg to win the feature. Rhinelander’s Jason Melton won the 2nd Pure Stock Heat, and would have given Lundberg a run in the feature if he would not have had a flat tire midway through the Feature.

This year TNT Motor Speedway is going to run the alcohol burning, motorcycle engine propelled Micro Sprint 600’s. These ‘winged’ sprinters showed how fast they can run on the high-banked 1/3rd mile track. Even when Shiocton, Wisconsin’s, Denver Larson was hitting speeds of over 90 MPH, it was Rhinelander’s Jered Cech that showed Larson and the hundreds of fans watching, that it takes more then speed, ‘you still have to be able to pass when needed’ As the race was winding down, Cech got on the inside of Larson In the 4th corner to take the lead and the win.

The Junior Sprints also made their debut at TNT Motor Speedway. Wausau’s Alysha Krueger, who races and wins on and in anything with an internal combustion engine, took both the Heat and the Feature.

The return of racing to TNT Motor Speedway opened up with a parade lap of over 40 cars in memory of Robert ‘Fireball” Schroeder. Racing returns to TNT Motor Speedway this coming Saturday Night. Hot Laps at 6:30, racing to begin at 7:15 pm CT.
