Oshkosh, May 15- What a GREAT night for racing at the Oshkosh SpeedZone Raceway Friday night.
The first ever visit in Wisconsin for the Lucas Oil Late Models, the first round of the “King of the Ring” series for the Automotive Supply Company IMCA Modifieds and a special event for the Outlaw Chassis Street Stocks produced a fast paced, non stop event on the well groomed, smooth fast 1/3 mile clay oval.
A total of 11 cars included 29 Lucas Oil Late Models, 53 Automotive Supply Company IMCA Modifieds and 29 Outlaw Chassis Street Stocks.
Following 19 heat races and consys, the feature fields were set with the Street Stocks on the track first. Ryan Blank grabbed the early lead with Patty Winkler, Mark Schultz, Wayne Morgan, Steve Ecker and Clint Evans behind. Schultz moved up on the outside and advanced to second on four and one lap later pulled into the lead. Ecker also hooked up on the outside line and followed into the runner up spot two laps later. For the next 10 laps, the pair battled nearly side by side for the top spot with Schultz holding the position. Ecker finally pulled off the pass for the lead for good diving inside out of turn 2 on lap 16. Ecker started to pull away and just as the white appeared to the leader, the lone caution of the race also ended the contest with Ecker claiming his first feature win of the season. Schultz took second holding off the hard charging Jerry Winkler, Point leader, Jeff Jungwirth took fourth with Morgan and Winkler rounding out the top six.
The Automotive Supply Company IMCA Modifieds put 24 cars on the feature grid with Mike Wedelstadt and Brad Lautenbach starting on the front row. The pair pulled away at the start and for the first 5 laps ran side by side for the number one spot. Wedelstadt was finally able to wrestle the lead away and started to open his own lead. The battle behind was for third with Brian Mullen, Todd Dart, Eric Arneson, Johnny Whitman, Eddie Muenster and Sean Jerovetz In a cluster behind.
A lone caution flew for a stalled car on lap 11, and Wedelstadt resumed his lead after the restart with Lautenbach, Mullen, Dart, Arneson, Whitman, Muenster and Jerovetz now right behind.
Wedelstadt pulled away over the final laps to record his first feature win of the year. Mullen caught Lautenbach with three laps left to take the runner up finish. Arneson claimed fourth, with Dart and Jerovetz rounding out the top six.
The Lucas Oil Late Models competed in a 50 lap main event that also saw a lone caution for debris on lap 19. The battle for the lead was a side by side battle between Dennis Erb and Earl Pearson, Jr that lasted for 10 laps before Pearson was able to take control and pick up his 3rd feature win of the season. Jimmy Mars made a last lap charge pay off to take second place over Erb.
