TONY BOUCHE OUT DUELS CHARLIE KROLL TO CLAIM IMCA STOCK CAR MAIN AT THUNDERHILL RACEWAY
(Sturgeon Bay, WI) May 9, 2015 Results- Last night at Thunderhill Raceway a pair cagey veterans in Tony Bouche and Charlie Kroll squared off. Bouche was able to put his 38 years of racing knowledge to good use as he out dueled Kroll late in the going to score a popular win in the IMCA Stock Cars. Other feature winners were Greg Gretz (IMCA Modified), Cody Rass (IMCA Sport Mod), Dave Schmidt (IMCA Hobby Stock) and James Dahlstrom (Street Stock)
With a perfect racing surface, the IMCA Stock Car main event hit the track proving why they’re the class to watch. John Anschutz and Kevin Luedtke swapped the lead before Scott Reinhardt raced to the top spot. Luedtke encountered trouble on lap 4 which collected point leader Dave Bouche, Jeremy Anschutz and Jamie Suchocki. Suchocki was done for the night, Anschutz continued after a trip down pit lane and Bouche rejoined the field. As the race resumed “Chargin” Charlie Kroll was able to slip by Reinhardt for the lead on lap 8.
Trouble ensued just past the midway point as Billy LeMieux and John Anschutz locked horns, sending both of them spinning, bringing out the caution. The displeasure between the drivers was obvious. On the restart Tony Bouche in his Ford Thunderbird raced to second behind Kroll’s Chevy Monte Carlo. For several laps the duo ran nose to tail on the high side. With 4 laps remaining Kroll slipped high allowing Bouche take the lead. Bouche went on the to score the win and a clean sweep. Kroll had to settle for second, Shawn Havel was third in his first run of the season, Dave Bouche and Reinhardt completed the top five.
In Street Stock action it was like groundhogs day, as Billy LeMieux led the opening laps only to suffer mechanical woes that ended his night. Phil Faustini inherited the lead but his reign up front didn’t last long as point leader James Dahlstrom grabbed the top spot on lap 12. Dahlstrom worked the low groove to perfection and never looked back, earning his 2nd feature win of the season. Faustini crossed the line comfortably in second, Dennis Weidner was third, rookie Michael Wagner was fourth and Samantha Konitzer scored her first ever top five. It was a double header weekend for Dahlstrom as he also won Friday at Luxemburg.
Greg Gretz had “No Re-Gretz” in getting out the broom with a clean sweep in the IMCA Modifieds. Todd Dart applied heavy pressure the last half of the event but Gretz was up for the challenge leading every lap. Dart was second, Mark Joski looked solid with a third place, Tyler DeBouche was fourth and Chuck Carmin drove his home built chassis to fifth.
Dave “Holy” Schmidt remains undefeated in the IMCA Hobby Stocks. It wasn’t an easy win be any means as Ford Malvitz built up a straightaway advantage running the cushion. Schmidt who started 10th on the grid, caught Malvitz by running the same line. With a handful of laps remaining Schmidt cleared Malvitz for the lead using the low groove. Schmidt went on to win his 3rd feature of the year. Malvitz had his best performance to date with second, Marcus Moede, Travis Lumaye and Dean Anhalt completed the top five.
Cody Rass had a perfect night leading every lap of the heat and feature in the IMCA Sport Mods. Chris Budzban closed late to place second, Randy LeMieux Jr. was third, rookie Vince Engebregtsen was fourth and Jarred VanLaanen was fifth.
Next Saturday will be brought to you by Dave Hatch Racing. The kids Power Wheels race will take place on the infield go-kart track at intermission.
