SpeedZone results May 8, 2015

Oshkosh, May 8- Week number 2 of the 2015 season featured 135 cars and produced 5 first time winners Friday night at the Oshkosh Speedzone Raceway.

Joe White led the opening lap of the Total Power Sales IMCA Stock Car feature with rookie contender Jerry Winkler taking over on lap 2. Winkler pulled away leaving the race for second over the first half of the contest.

On lap 10, the first caution of the race erased Winklers near straightaway lead. White was still holding second with Travisd Van Straten, John Heinz, Dylan Heillmann, Larry Karcz, Jr and David Hoerning now right behind for the restart. Van Straten snuck between the first 2 cars on the restart and took the lead which he was able to hold to the finish to collect his second straight feature victory. The battle for the runner up spot stayed tight to the finish with Heinz taking the spot and Winkler third. Karcz, Heillmann and C.J. Greaves rounded out the top six.

After missing the main last week with mechanical problems, Colten Van Hierden came back on a mission Friday night and burst from the second row to the lead at the start of the IMCA Sport Mod feature and despite a pair of cautions that bunched the field, was able to run off with his first feature win of the season. Ryan Besaw chased Van Hierden for most of the race but could not mount a solid challenge with the leader hooked up on the outside line. Jon Schultz, Jeff Steenbergen, Tim Sheppard and Jeff Schmuhl finished in the top six.

Veteran driver, Jerry Muenster led the opening 2 circuits of the Automotive Supply Company IMCA Modified feature before Tony Wedelstadt took control with his dad, Mike, following into the runner up spot. Following a lap 3 caution, the race ran the distance with Tony leading the way in the high groove followed by Mike, with Brian Mullen joining the top three on lap 7. The trio pulled away from the field in what turned into a dicey battle for the lead over the final half of the race. Mullen took several laps to secure the runner up spot from Mike Wedelstadt, and moved in on the leader. Tony stayed in the outside line with Mullen coming from high on the straights and driving inside entering the turns.

Over the final 8 laps, Mullen would pull inside entering turn one and lead off turn 2. Wedelstadt was stronger in the west corners and would maintain the lead. Mike was right behind the pair.

Tony was able to close the deal with Mullen settling for the second place finish with Mike Wedelstadt taking third. The race behind sorted out with Johnny Whitman taking fourth. Sean Jerovetz and Brian Drexler rounded out the top six.

Aaron Stolp lead the opening charge in the Gold Star Racing Product Grand National feature with Tim Doehling taking over the lead on lap 2. Kenny Richards moving into the runner up spot and by lap 5, Larry Richards joined the leaders. Over the next 7 laps, the lead would swap back and forth between the trio. Larry was solid running the outside line and was final able to take over the top spot on lap 13, and pulled away over the final laps to secure his first feature win of the season. Kenny followed in second at the finish with Doehling taking third. Terry Van Roy, Brian Henry and Stolp rounded out the top six.

The Outlaw Chassis Street Stock division saw Jonny Ashcraft take charge immediately at the start followed by Ryan Blank, Wayne Morgan, Mike Nehmer, Steve Ecker and Jeff Wicinski. Ashcraft open a lead on the field as second place became the race to watch. Steve Gawaresky and Ecker moved by Blank by lap 10 and faced a huge lead to eat into by Ashcraft. That changed on lap 12, when the engine let loose on Blanks car entering turn three. The car came to rest entering turn one which brought out the first caution of the race.

Ashcraft now had the field right behind for the restart. Gawaresky took advantage of the situation and moved into the lead on the restart. With Ecker, Jeff Jungwirth, Nehmer and Mark Schultz moving up by lap 16. A final caution on the next lap when Nehmer stalled in turn one set up a 4 lap dash to the finish with Gawaresky holding the lead to the finish too collect his first feature win of the season . Ecker held off Jungwirth for the runner up spot with Schultz, Morgan and Wicinski making the top six.

It took several attempts to get the first lap in the books for the Ellington Mutual Insurance Dirt Devils with Shaun Bangart finally getting the spot on the lap sheets. A couple more cautions kept the field packed behind the leader. The caution appeared again on lap three for an incident in turn 4, and was then red flagged because of a medical issue, which resulted in the race ending at that point. Because of the situation, track officials decided to call the race official giving Bangart his first feature win of the season. Joe Minks, Chris Maas, Wes Lungwitz, Amish Kollmann and Carl King were credited with the top six positions.

Next week, the Lucas Oil Late Models will invade the SpeedZone for a full powered night of action. The Automotive Supply Co IMCA Modifieds will running round 1 of their King of the Ring series. The Street Stocks will also be part of the big night.
