Five New Faces Race To Victory Lane In Week Two
Shawano,WI,05/02/15—Former track champions Nick Anvelink, Jerry Wilinski, and Tracy Wassenberg each raced to their first wins of the year at the historic half mile Shawano Speedway. While Jusin Jacobsen held off a defending track champion for his first win of the year, and Jasper Drengler again showed why he is one of the top pilots in the area en route to victory lane.
Brett Swedberg shot from his front row starting position and into the lead at the start of the Late Model feature, while Paul Parker and Nick Avelink moved into second and third in the race. On the third lap Anvelink cleared Parker to move to second and quickly began to erase Swedberg’s lead. On lap eight of the race Anvelink pulled even with Swedberg as the pair raced side by side for the next two laps with Anvelink taking the lead on lap 10. Swedberg stayed with Anvelink for the next few laps as the pair continued to tour the track alongside one another. On lap thirteen though Swedberg’s machine began to smoke and lost power coasting into the pits. This put Anvelink oiut in front by himself. Anvelink cruised to his first win of the year. Paul Parker took second. Doug Blashe finished in third.
Mark Weisnicht took the lead on the opening lap of the IMCA Modified feature and wasted no time pulling to a considerable lead over Mitch Stankowski. With nearly a half straight away lead by lap 6, Weisnicht dropped off the pace and pulled pitside. This handed the lead to Stankowski on lap 7. A caution flag then bunched the field back up. Lap 8 saw Jerry Wilinski nose ahead of Stankowski to take the lead away. Stankowski powered back to the outside of Wilinski on lap 9 to take back the lead. Stankowski continued to lead Wilinski and a hard charging Matt Oreskovich who started the race in 17th. After the completion of lap 14 the caution flag flew. On the restart of the race Wilinski was able to take back the lead from Stankowski. Another caution period after lap 17 set up a 3 lap shootout to the finish. As the race went back to green Wilinski stayed in the lead with Oreskovich putting the pass on Stankowski for second. As the checkered flag waived it was Wilinski winning over Oreskovich, while Marcus Yarie passed Stankowski coming out of turn four to take third away.
Justin Jacobsen and Gary Kasperek raced door to door for the first few laps of the IMCA Stock Car feature before Jacobsen began to pull away. Jacobsen masterfully worked the high line of the race track as the race stayed green. Lap 8 saw Travis VanStraten assert himself in the second position. With Jacobsen continuing to lead, VanStraten began to chip away at the lead. On lap 14 VanStraten moved to within to car lengths of Jacobsen as the pair now raced through lapped traffic. Over the last five laps of the race VanStraten applied heavy pressure to Jacobsen, but Jacobsen never faltered. The pair raced the final lap side by side with Jacobsen winning at the line. Brandon Czarapata finished third in the race over Kasperek.
The IMCA Sport Mod feature was paced early by Justin Woller though he received plenty of pressure from Jordan Barkholtz. Barkholtz got into the back of Woller while trying to make the pass for the lead on lap 11 causing Woller to spin. Barkoltz was sent to the rear of the field, while Woller was given back the lead on the restart. When the green flag flew again Woller was joined by Tracy Wassenberg, Lucas Lamberies, and Wyatt Block in the battle for the lead. Woller spun while exiting turn four on lap 16 handing Wassenberg the point position. Wassenberg held of Wyatt Block for the win. It was Block second runnerup finish in a row. Lucas Lamberies took third for the second straight week.
Jasper Drengler wrestled the lead from Calvin Stueck on lap 6 of the Mighty Four feature and went on to pick up the victory. Stueck held off Matt Brehmer to finish second.
Racing will continue next Saturday night with Ladies night. As part of mother’s day weekend the first 500 ladies will get in free. Racing starts at 6:30. More information can be found online at www.shawanospeedway.net.
