Fall Classic Oshkosh results
Oshkosh, September 26-27- The Oshkosh SpeedZone Raceway brought their 2014 season to a close with their Annual Fall Classic event under perfect weather conditions both days. 172 cars in 6 divisions checked in to run for the Fall Classic titles.
The feature portion of the program started off with 23 cars in the Ellington Mutual Insurance Dirt Devils taking the track. After three failed attempts to complete a lap, the race went non stop. Ralph Liegeios, Jr grabbed the lead at the start and pulled away immediately from the pack. The race for the second developed into a race long 5 car battle. Shaun Bangart, Calvin Stueck, Alex Siedl, Kasey Gross and Mike Montie ran side by side and bumper to bumper the entire distance swapping positions back and forth.
Liegeirs enjoyed the sunny Saturday drive alone out front and collected the victory, his first at the track this season. Bangart emerged as the runner up with Montie taking third. Gross and Stueck rounded out the top five finishers.
The Outlaw Chassis Street Stocks were up next with 20 cars on the grid. Lexii Ashcraft took charge at the start with Steve Ecker, Shawn Hayden, Jerry Winkler and Rob Maule following . Ecker tried running the outside line next to Ashcraft and Hayden stayed on the inside. The 3 way battle for the lead stayed that way until lap 7 when Hayden was able to find a gap inside and slipped into the lead.
The first caution appeared for a spun car on lap 9, and on the reatsrt, Hayden took off in the lead with Winkler finding his way intot he runner up spot. The top 5 ran in line with Winkler trying to find any slip by Hayden to take the lead.
The opening came in a different way for Winkler on lap 15. As the leaders were entering the first turn. The drive shaft broke on Haydens car, forcing a caution for debris and Haydens early exit from the race. Winkler accepted the lead for the five lap dash to the finish with Ecker, Maule, Ryan Blank, Mark Schultz and Ashcraft behind. Winkle was able to stave off the heavy challenge from Maule and Ecker over the final laps to collect his 4th feature win of the season at the track. Maule, making his first visit to the Zone, took second over Ecker. Blank, Ashcraft and Kelly Knutson rounded out the top six.
The Gold Star Racing Products Grand Nationals took the track next and after 2 quick cautions in the opening 4 laps, the race went non stop for the final 16 laps. Kenny Richards took the lead from Tim Doehling on the restart with Larry Richards, Brian Henry, Derek Schrauth and Justin Brown moving in behind. LARRY Richards took the runner up spot on lap 6 and pulled alongside Kenny to try to take the lead. After the mid point of the race, Larry dropped back in line and kept Kenny in his sights for the rest of the way, but could not find a gap to advance. Kenny claimed his second feature win of the season with Larry right behind. Doehling, Henry, Schrauth and Jeff Richards rounded out the top 6.
Up next were the Total Power Sale IMCA Stock Cars. One lone caution slowed the pace after the first lap, then it was flat out to the finisah. Travis Van Straten took the lead at the start, and after the restart, started to pull away from the field and was never challenged the rest of the way. Rob Krull and David Hoerning took up the next 2 spots and also inched teir way ahead of the field as a tight battle for 4th developed between Sean Jerovetz, Kyle Frederick, Joe Schwister and Vern Stedjie.
Van Straten cruised the entire race and took the checkerd for his 6th feature win of the season a ½ lap ahead of Krull and Hoerning. Frederick finally wrestled his way ahead of the pack to finish fourth with Schwister in fifth and Mark Schuenemann coming up to take sixth.
The IMCA Sport Mods took the green falg with Joey Taycher taking charge with Steve Schneider, Ron Besaw, Colten Van Hierden, Josh Long and Mark Howe behind. A couple cautions on laps 3 and 4 kept the field bunched with Taycher maintaining the lead. Schneider continued to pressure for the lead trying both inside and outside lines to advance. On lap 7, Schneider tried the outside line again and touched the wall in the front. He stalled in turn one bringing out the caution and then retired from the race, putting Van Heirden behind Taycher followed by Howe, Besaw, Jake Solem and Keith Schmitt.
Over the next 8 laps, Van Heirden pressure Taycher heavily trying to work to the front. Van Hierden was able to get the nose inside Taycher entering turn three several times only to be fought back. Several cautions on laps 15 and 16 set up a tight 4 lap dash to the finish. Van Hieden again applied the pressure but could not shake Taychers concentration. Taycher collected the hard fought victory with Van Hierden and Besaw right behind. Solem tok 4th with Tracy Wassenberg and Jeff Schmuhl, both coming through the consy to round out the top six.
The final race of the season put the Automtive Supply Company IMCA Modifeds on the grid with 24 cars set to go for 25 laps.
The second try to start put Tim Robbinns in the lead followed by Chris Engels, Darin Duffy, Marcus Yarie, Mike Klenz and Josh Long behind. The field stayed bunched, with everyone exploring the entire racing surface to find their groove. Robbns maintained the lead but could not open a lead as the field stayed right behind. A spin brought out the first caution on lap 14. Robbins was still in control with Engels, Jeff Steenbegen, Brian Mullen, Duffy, Yarie and Klenz behind.
The battle behind the leader grew even tighter as the laps clicked off. Engels was pressuring for an opening and on lap 21, tried to get insdie out of tirn 2, but clipped a tire and spun, binging out the final caution and setting up a 4 lap dash to the finish. Yaire was lined up second with Duffy, Klenz, Jason Czarapata, Eddie Muenster and Sean Jerovetz behind.
Duffy had one chance on the restart from the outside. With the green displayed, Duffy took it hard alongside of Robbins entering turn one, and held the line through the corner to emerge as the leader on the back chute. Yarie took the inside line into the runner up spot and right up on Duffy. Duffy held off Yarie over the final 3 laps to collect his first ever feature win at the SpeedZone. Yarie took the runner up spot with Robbins holding on to take the third place finish, his best runoff the season. Jerovetz, Czaraapta and Brian Drexler, all from the consys, rounded out the top six.
All race winners from the weekend and the top three I the features all received trophies from track announcer, Steve Parsons, in memory of his daughter, Kim Parsons to promote organ and tissue donation. Grandaughters, Harli and Brianna made the trophy presentations.
