Seymour Holiday Classic update
Seymour- August 30- N.E.W. DIRT is gearing up for a big night tomorrow as the final leg of the 2014 Summer Holiday Classic series is the spotlight to go along with the final point night for all of the weekly divisions at the Seymour Speedway.
The Budweiser IMCA Modifieds, Coors Light IMCA Stock Cars, Turbo Blue Street Stocks, IMCA Sport Mods and 4 Cylinders will bring to a close their point seasons and will be joined by the Spectator Eliminators for their final appearance of the season as well.
Just a reminder that the Late Models will NOT be here Sunday, but the weekly divisions will be running for additional Holiday Classic purse money.
As reported earlier, the 2 modified divisions are all but locked up for the 2014 season. That leaves three divisions to decide champions and all three could crown first time club champions.
The Coors Light IMCA Stock Car division rarely disappoints in the quality of the racing on the 1/3 mile banked oval. Three, four and five wide racing is the norm and the final point night should be the best yet. Former 5 time division champion, Rod Snellenberger, has been strong here all season and has won three features while leading the standings for much of the year as well. To add to the drama on the final point night, Rod chasing his 200 career IMCA Stock Car feature win. He won number 199 here on August 10 and has found getting the benchmark win a task. A win tonight will make him reach that elusive goal and give him a division leading 6th track championship, his first here since 2008.
An added note, of his 199 feature total, almost a third, 62, have been recorded here at Seymour.
He is 17 points ahead of Travis Van Straten, who also has won three features this season. Van Straten has been strong on most area track this season and will continue to chase for the title. Travis is no stranger to success here in Seymour either. He was the 1998 Street Stock Rookie of the Year and has 4 career division feature wins there. He was the 2009 IMCA Sport Mod Rookie of the Year and Track Champion and has 5 feature wins there.
The next three drivers, are locked in a tight battle for third place. Chaz Van Ooyen, Jr and Barry Van Staten are tied for third with 493 marks each. Van Ooyen built a new car this season and has found it to his liking, being a top five runner all season and collecting a feature win along the way in a thrilling race long side by side battle with Hot Rod. Barry has also been successful on area tracks but has found victory lane here a tough trip, with several runner up and solid top 5 runs. Kyle Frederick is in fourth only 2 points behind the third place duo. He is a former track champions and has 2 feature wins this season.
The Turbo Blue Street Stock division has been a fun one to watch this season, and has four drivers vying for their first ever Seymour Track title.
Ryan Blank has been lingering in the top part of the standings all season, and finds himself 1 point ahead of Jeff Jungwirth entering this weeks final point race. Jungwirth ahs led most of the season, and while Blank has picked up 2 feature wins in the past month, Jungwirth has had Lady Luck make a turn over the past 2 weeks.
Two weeks ago, Blank was 4 point behind Jungwirth entering the feature. The leader had problems early and was forced out of the race only to have Blank suffer problems of his own one lap later, to join Jungwirth in the pit. Alan Schlueter and Patty Winkler, the other title players, used that as incentive to have solid top four runs that week to make the tile chase closer. Last week, Blank ran to his second feature win. With Jungwirth still having problems Blank emerged 1 mark ahead entering this week, 520-519. Jungwirth is tied for a divisaion leading 4 feature wins and it will come down to who finishes in front of who to decide it all.
Don’t forget Schlueter and Winkler. They sit only 12 and 14 points behind the leader respectively and both have been consistent top five runners this season. It is definatly up for grabs and should be a hard fought fight to the finish and any one of them will earn their first career Seymour Track Title.
The 4 Cylinder has turned into a family affair between Cody and Tyler Hungerford. The pair have been atop the standings for much of the season and are now 14 points apart entering Sunday night.
Both have been consistent top 5 runners all season and both have a feature win to their credit. With nine different division feature winners this season, the competition has been very tight and fake culd determne this years title holder. It will be either drivers first track title here in Seymour.
The Spectator Eliminators have been running a point system this year and tonights final run will determine their first track champion.
All race winners, heats and Features, will receive a special Kim Parsons Memorial Trophy for their efforts, provided by track announcer, Steve arsons, in memory of his daughter and promoting Organ and Tissue donations.
Racing starts at 5:30 PM SHARP Sunday night.
The final race of the 2014 season will be a special added race next SATURDAY, September 6th. With all other local track done for the regular season, Seymour added the race as an added bonus for all of the drivers and fans that do NOT go to Boone for the Nationals. It will be a regular race for all of the weekly divisions and a final chance to catch a race at Seymour for 2014.
