SpeedZone August 22 results
Oshkosh August 22- The 2014 Corn Belt Clash Late Models Series coupled with the 5th Annual George Scheffler Memorial/ Hales Corners Reunion Late Models special made for a BIG night of racing Friday at the SpeedZone Raceway.
The Late Model draw was the $6000 top feature prize and it brought a stellar field of 50 Super Lates from throughout the Midwest to the 1/3 mile clay oval in Oshkosh. The Automotive Supply IMCA Modifieds also boaster a strong field with 52 cars and The Gold Star Racing Supplies Grand Nationals signed in 21 cars for the night.
The Late Model feature event put a quality field of 24 cars on the track for the 30 lap distance and it was pole sitter, Chad Simpson taking charge at the drop of the green. Simpson just pulled away from the pack with plenty of shuffling behind.
A lone caution on lap 12 bunched the pack but Simpson continued on his way on the restart, leaving the battle develop for the runner up spot. Last years feature winner, A.J. Diemel, was running second and was quickly joined by Jimmy Mars. The pair ran side by side for 8 laps before Diemel was able to gain control. Jason Utter came through traffic and challenged Mars for the rest of the race which allowed Diemel to pull ahead. Utter took the third place finish with Mars settling for fourth. Jason Rauen and Chris Simpson rounded out the top six with Simpson coming from the back of the field . Nick Anvelink came from the back of the field and placed 7th in the final tally.
Simpsons drive was basically unchallenged to collect the Corn Belt series checkers and more important;y, added his name to the George Scheffler Memorial traveling trophy as the fifth different winner of the award.
The Automotive Supply IMCA Modified main also put 24 cars on the feature lineup. Mike Wedelstadt grabbed the top spot on the start and led the early part of the race despite several cautions over the first few laps. Mike Mueller and Jeff Steenbergen stayed close while racing after the leader.
A final caution on lap 8 bunched the field for the last time and set up a time shortened race. Wedelstadt was able to maintain the top spot to the finish and collect the $1000 big check for his 2nd feature win of the season. Mueller suck out the runner up finish with Steenbergen thirds. Brian Mullen took fourth with point leaer, Sean Jerovetz taking fifth and Jason Zdroik rounding out the top six.
The Gold Star Racing Products Grand Nationals had a rough go in their feature event with 5 cautions over the first couple laps making racing difficult.
Tyler Kulow set the pace through the early mix ups and led the way to a caution on lap 5 with Jon Schnultz III, Larry Richards, Brian Henry and Tom Schneider behind. On the restart, Henry’s mount blew down the back chute, leaving a path of oil and water into turn three. The race was called to allow cleanup with Richards taking home his second straight and third feature win of the season. Kulow took the runner up spot, his first night at the track this season with Schultz taking third. Kenny Richards, Tim Reichenberger and Schneider rounded out the top six.
The special Hales Corners Reunion race saw the drivers in Grand Nationals and it was Al Shill besting the 8 drivers to take the checkered flag.
The regular season comes to a close at the SpeedZone next Friday, August 29 as all six divisions run for their season championships.
