EWSC winners Mark Fieber, Mitch McGrath, Eric Scribner & Ralph Liegeois Jr. pick up wins, Hagar’s Bonuses on Spancrete Night Night at the Races

Friday, August 15th, Manitowoc WI. – A tacky fast surface awaited the field of drivers along with a pumped up group of employees on Spancrete Night at the Races. Dave “Hagar” Nelson also provided extra incentive on Hagar’s Half Pounder Bonus Night as the Feature winners rolled a die for extra cash winnings provided by Hagar.

GRAND NATIONALS
The field of Grand Nationals came to the track with the 93s Dan Schumacher of Germantown and 17x Mark Kuhfuss of Sheboygan Falls on the front row. Backing them up were 95 Donny Kulow of Plymouth and 21 Kevin Lubach of Elkhart Lake), while 37 Ryan Minster of Sheboygan joined at the rear of the field after the guardrail shaking crash he was involved in during his heat race. Taking the green Schumacher headed to the bottom while Kuhfuss rolled to the high line and challenged the 93s hard. Deeper in the field cars were spreading 3 & 4 wide jostling for position. Mark Fieber of Cascade in the 28, and 24k Tyler Kulow of New Holstein worked their way forward to challenge the top 5. Kuhfuss stuck fast in the high line and worked his way around Schumacher, pulling out by half a car. Five laps in Kuhfuss held the lead with Schumacher, Fieber, Lubach, and Kulow trying to run him down. A lap later Lubach spun out low in Turn 2, and kept the car running and got back going, allowing 7 Brian Gilles (Plymouth) to move into the top 5. Kuhfuss and Schumacher battled at the front, with Kuhfuss holding the advantage at midway,

with Fieber, Kulow, Gilles, 16s Will Schumacher (Hartford), and 47 Nick Schumacher (Eagle) in the top 7 positions. Yellow lights came on during Lap 12 as 21h Keith Kellenbenz (Manitowoc) spun out in Turn 2 and could not get restarted, he eventually refired and joined at the rear of the restart. Kuhfuss restarted out front alone, with Fieber, 93s Schumacher, 24k Kulow, Gilles, 16 Schumacher, and 47 Schumacher behind him and pushing hard. Fieber used the low line to finally get in front of Kuhfuss, and stuck hard on the bottom stretching the lead, while Gilles was all over the 93s and Kuhfuss. Gilles got the best of 93 Schumacher and Kuhfuss with 3 to go, moving in to challenge Fieber. It did not matter as Fieber would not be denied in his first visit to EWSC in 2014 as he rolled to the win with Gilles, 93s Schumacher, Kuhfuss, 47 Schumacher, 24k Kulow, 16 Schumacher, and 55s Don Schumacher (Milwaukee) rounding out the top 8. Gilles took Hard Charger honors passing 9 cars, while Fieber rolled the die in Victory Lane and won a cool $200 from Hagar for his win.

BAILEIGH INDUSTRIAL LATE MODELS
With extra money from both Wild Inc. and a chance for the feature winner to roll for extra cash, the Baileigh Industrial Late Model field pulled onto the track with some heavy hitters up front after a couple drivers scratched from the event just before the start. Waukesha’s Russ Scheffler in the black, orange and white 74 and Jim Schmidt of Cleveland in his black, orange and white 79 made up the front row, while 74m Mitch McGrath (Waukesha) and 75 TJ Dolhoun (Milwaukee) returned after his nasty rollover on the backstretch 2 weeks prior. Crossing under the green, Scheffler shot into Turn 1 jumping into the lead, with Schmidt heading to the high line and McGrath using that to duck under him and jump into second coming out of Turn 2. Multiple grooves and tacky track had the drivers spreading out quickly with drivers picking lines and pushing hard. Early retirees 97 Justin Schmidt (Cleveland) and Nick Cochart (Casco) both left with mechanical issues, and 5 laps in 74 Scheffler was still out front, but being challenged by McGrath hard, with Schmidt, Dolhoun, 3 Brett Swedberg (Shawano) and 70 Brian Gilles (Plymouth) in the top 6. Just before midway the leaders started to encounter lapped traffic, as 38 Scott Haugstad (Plymouth) and Wayne Block (Tigerton) were the first to be caught by the leaders. McGrath used this to his advantage as he set up and passed Scheffler using another car as a screen. Gilles retired on Lap 16 with engine issues, as McGrath led Scheffler, Schmidt, Dolhoun, Swedberg, and 7b Tim Buhler (Glenbeulah). With the field spread out on the speedy 1/3 mile and no yellows to bring the field back together, the Baileigh Late Model feature again went green to checkered with 74m Mitch McGrath taking the win. Russ Scheffler, Jim Schmidt, Dolhoun, Swedberg, Buhler, 27x Justin Hirt (Tigerton), and 15s Rick Scheffler (Waukesha) rounded out the top 8. Points leader 63b Jesse Brey (Two Rivers) and 55p Michael Plate Sr. (Valders) made up the front row of the Defaut Auto Sportmod Feature, with 22b Brandon Berth (Cascade) and 17x Eric Scribner of Kiel sitting in Row 2. A fast and wide Turn 1 loomed as the field took the green and the drivers took on the challenge as they spread three and four wide out of Turn 2 running down the backstretch. Brey shot out of Turn 4 and lead Lap 1 with Scribner, Berth and 2 Todd Wiese (Algoma) hounding him into Turn 1. Brey hung tight to the bottom of the track while Scribner used the cushion to try and reel him in. Heat winner 34 Cody Eickberg (Plymouth) and 20 Cody Schroeder (Manitowoc), along with 53b Brian Reif (Mishicot) were working their way forward from deeper in the pack looking to get to the front. On Lap 4 Wiese got the best of Scribner and Brey and shot into the lead while Schroeder moved in to challenge Berth for 3rd. Scribner stuck to the high line and took the lead away from Wiese on Lap 6, but a caution slowed the field on Lap 7 as 25 Travis Arenz coasted to a stop high in Turn 2. Scribner led the field back to green with Wiese, Berth, Brey, and Schroeder holding the top 5 spots, and coming out of Turn 2 the group was back to the 3 wide battles again. Scribner held the lead as Berth was pushing Wiese hard on Lap 10, but aruptly slowed to a stop high in Turn 2 bringing out another yellow flag at he halfway point. The top 7 going back to green showed Scribner out front, with Wiese, Schroeder, Eickberg, Brey, Reif, and 86 Calvin Nowak of Abrams. Wiese continued to challenge Scribner, who was using the the middle and high lines to his advantage, while Eickberg chased down Schroeder, putting on a great show. Reif finally made a pass on Brey and moved in on Nowak, running door to door for 6 laps, neither driver with an advantage until Nowak got a great drive high out of Turn 2 and pulled out by a car length. Scribner held off the challenge by Wiese and rolled across the line for the win and a chance to roll the die in Victory Lane. Schroeder held off Eickberg at the line for third, followed by Nowak, Reif, Berth and Arenz back to 8th at the end after restarting at the rear after his spin. Nowak took home the Hard Charger picking up 8 positions.
