Mass and Koehler Top Red Cedar Speedway Special

Menomonie WI, August 14th – The WISSOTA Super Stocks and Midwest Modifieds ran a special event in conjunction with the USMTS Modified show on Thursday at the Red Cedar Speedway. With extra money on the line, big fields of cars were on hand in both classes and the winners, both first time winners at the track this year, were Dave Mass and Nick Koehler and both drivers made late race passes for their respective wins.
The Super Stock feature went nonstop from green to checkered with Ben Hillman and Bart Steffen battling for the lead on the opening lap. Hillman went to the high side and that gave him the edge he needed to pull into the lead but Steffen remained close.
Eric Olson was on the move early too and he drove past Tommy Richards and Jesse Redetzke to move into third and he began to challenge the leaders. Mass was also on the move from the fourth row and he quickly caught and then passed Olson.

Mass continued his charge as he drove into second with Steffen starting to fade just a bit. Olson followed Mass’ move and took the third spot.
Mass then closed on Hillman as the top side seemed to be slowing down a little bit and Mass, the Minnesota visitor, drove underneath Hillman down the back chute and took over the lead. Olson continued to move forward and he took over second from Hillman a few laps later.
Mass gradually pulled away over the remainder of the event and eventually opened his lead to about ten car lengths. Olson completed a strong run in second with Hillman finishing up third. The rest of the top five saw Richards have a steady run for fourth with point champion Mike Keller completing the top five.
The Midwest Modifieds matched the Super Stock’s efforts with a green to checkered run in their main event also. Jake Smith and Koehler shared the front row but neither one of them could grab the early lead as Cory Crapser blasted to the cushion and took the lead before one lap could be completed. Crapser threatened to run away with the show in the early going as he opened up some distance on the pack as Koehler, Michael Truscott, Grant Southworth and Ryan Viltz battled hard for position behind him.
Eventually Koehler would solidify the second spot and then began a gradual drive that would see him narrow the gap on Crapser and begin to pressure the leader. Crapser continued to run the high side while Koehler was bouncing over the tires on the extreme inside of the track but Nick began to pick up the pace and as the race drew near a finish, he was putting serious pressure on Crapser.
With an inside move in turn one, he was able to get a good run and he drove under Crapser and took over the lead. Cory tried to fight back but Koehler actually stretched his margin in the later laps and he drove home for an impressive win. Crapser had to settle for second with Truscott next in line. The rest of the top five had a good battle with Southworth scored fourth ahead of Viltz at the finish.
Rodney Sanders from Happy Texas was the winner of the USMTS Modified portion of the show.
Racing continues on Friday, August 15th when the Season Championships are decided in all seven divisions that race at the speedway. Race time will be 7 p.m.
