Mike Anderson Edges Glenz in Red Cedar Speedway Modified Run

Menomonie Wi, Aug 1 – It this would have been the WISSOTA 100, Dakota State Fair Speedway promoter Orville Chenoweth would have owed Mike Anderson an extra $1,000 for his last lap race pass promotion, but since it was the Red Cedar Speedway instead, Anderson was satisfied to settle for the feature win and in doing so, took over the track point lead.
Other winners on Friday night included Jason Forehand, Shane Halopka, Sam Fankhauser, Jesse Bryan and Jeremy Johnson.

Mark Hanson and Brent Prochnow battled for the lead on the opening lap of the Modified main event while Jesse Glenz beat Kevin Adams to the high side of the track to take third and then quickly closed in on the leaders. Glenz powered by the front two also to take over the lead. Meanwhile, Anderson was running the low side of the track and he gradually closed into contention as he raced under Prochnow into second.
The top two then engaged in a crowd pleasing battle as they raced lap after lap around the track nearly side by side. One lap Glenz would hit the cushion right and he would edge ahead and then on the next lap, Anderson would make a good tour on the bottom and surge into the lead.
Meanwhile, Ashley Anderson came charging up to third as Prochnow and Adams battled for the next position. However, the top two racers separated themselves from the field as they continued their private battle.
As the laps ran down, nothing changed as the top two jockeyed back and forth. They took the white flag nearly side by side but going into turn one, Glenz got too high and caught the wall which dragged him down and when he couldn’t get off the concrete, Anderson took advantage to move under him and secure the lead. Jesse threw his car into turn three in a bold move to catch Anderson, but Mike had too much of an edge as he drove on for his third win at Red Cedar, the only Modified driver to have won more than one main there this year.
Glenz settled for a strong second with Ashley Anderson next in line and Adams who finally passed Prochnow for that position.
While the Modified feature was an entertaining one, the strongest individual performance of the night was probably turned in by Forehand, who came from the ninth starting spot to run away from the field in the nonstop Super Stock main event.
Kenny Davis, Tom Karis, Ben Hillman and Gunnar Watkins were locked in a big battle in the early going of the Super Stock main. With about eight cars in the lead bunch, Forehand quickly moved into contention as he was running strong right on the low side of the track. Karis continued to maintain the top spot while Hillman and Watkins battled right behind and beside him for position.
The top three were still going at it for position when Forehand caught the top three and in a tremendous move off turn four, he dove to the low side and while all three cars slid up the track, he shot off the corner on the bottom and drove into first just that quick. He took the halfway signal the next time around in what was a spectacular run to the front. And once he gathered the lead spot, he was long gone as he stretched his lead to nearly a full straightaway.
The charge then shifted to Eric Olson, who was making his own run from the third row and also using the Forehand line on the bottom of the track. As Jason drove on to his second Red Cedar win in a row, Olson completed his own impressive run as he passed Karis in the last couple of laps for second. Watkins got by Hillman right at the end to take the fourth spot.
Another driver winning his second Red Cedar feature in a row was Halopka and he earned the victory with a hard fought win over Nick Koehler, aided in part by a well placed yellow flag late in the event.
Jake Smeltzer and Travis Anderson were the early battlers for the lead spot but Koehler got up on the high side and blasted past both of them to take over the lead. Halopka worked his way up from the eighth starting position using all lanes on the track. After a hard battle , he took second from Smeltzer who was having a strong run of his own.
Halopka sized up Koehler for the lead, trying both high and low and finally finding an opening on the inside off turn one and he shot into the lead.
However, Koehler didn’t give up and after adjusting his line on the track, he came charging back at Halopka and as he came charging off of turn four with the momentum to take over the lead, the yellow flag waved.
With only two laps left, Halopka got a good restart while Koehler got too high in turn one and lost time. Halopka then drove on for the win with Koehler recovering for second. The late race scramble saw Kerry Halopka come roaring up to third as he got past Smeltzer with Anderson completing the top five.
After a first lap scramble saw Adam Soltis into the turn four wall and trigger a yellow, the Street Stocks ran a nonstop main event. Fankhauser got to the front early and he led the rest of the way. Mike Knudtson tried to put the pressure on him but Fankhauser maintained his lead without too much of a challenge. Ron Hanestad gradually worked his way to the front and made it up to third spot as the laps ran out with him edging out Jimmy Randall and Cody Kummer for position.
Bryan got into the lead early in the Pure Stock feature, passing Hunter Van Gilder to take over the top spot. Once in front, he led the rest of the way with Jeremy Dahl trying to track him down. However, Bryan was strong and didn’t let Dahl close on him as he maintained his lead and drove on for his fourth feature win of the year at the track. Randy Burton worked his way up to third with Kent Harmon and Brett Myers completing the top five.
The Hornets competed in one of their best main events of the year with a three car battle raging for most of the feature race. Jeremy Johnson took the early lead but he was soon challenged by William Voeltz, last week’s winner. Voeltz took over the lead at one point but Johnson then regained the lead with a turn one pass. Meanwhile, Buddy Hanestad came roaring up from the fourth row and main it a three car battle for the lead. They raced in a pack during the late laps of the race and coming for the checkered flag, Hanestad tried to split the leaders as he went for the win. He got by Voeltz but came up a half car length short on Johnson as Jeremy took his first win of the year. Dan Prissel and Brad York completed the top five.
Next Friday night the Red Cedar Speedway will host its AMSOIL Race of Champions qualifier event. The feature winners in all five WISSOTA sanctioned divisions will automatically qualify for the Race of Champions event to be held during the WISSOTA 100 at the Dakota State Fair Speedway in Huron South Dakota in September. Late Models will return to the program and it will be the last point race of the 2014 racing season with point champions to also be determined at the completion of the main events. Race time is 7 p.m. and the program is sponsored by Keyes Chevytown and Mars Racing.
