‘Mid-Mod Madness’ to Kick Off August Action at ABC Raceway

Ashland, WI — The third of the ABC Raceway’s five regular weekly divisions will get its moment in the spotlight on Saturday night, as racers at the track get ready for the August “stretch run.”
Northern Wisconsin Fence of Phillips and Outlaw Wraps and Apparel of Ashland will be co-presenters of the eighth annual “Midwest Mod Madness” special, with an enhanced purse offered to the newest WISSOTA-sanctioned division to join the northern Wisconsin dirt oval’s regular Saturday night program.
“The Mid-Mods have really become a strong part of the show – not only in our program, but throughout WISSOTA,” Raceway president Kurt Beeksma stated recently. “The rules and cost-saving measures keep them relatively affordable for most drivers, yet the type of cars that they are make them very competitive. They generally bring the biggest numbers each race night to almost every track that runs them.”

While the class has historically been competitive here, this season seems to belong to Mike Truscott. The second-generation racer from Chippewa Falls has made ABC his regular Saturday night haunt after several seasons of sampling a variety of tracks, and it has paid off in a big way. Truscott has won five of the seven features run this season by the division here and has become the Raceway’s all-time feature win leader in the class, with 11 of the track’s 83 total feature wins to date.
Truscott’s streak of winning a heat race every night this season at Ashland came to a dramatic stop on July 19, however, when his car barrel-rolled while trying to make its way through the field during his heat. With a lot of help from his fellow racers he was able to make repairs and run the feature that night, coming from the tail of a very competitive 21-car field to finish sixth.
Overall in 2014 he has nearly 20 feature wins on the season and sits a close second in WISSOTA’s national Mid-Mod points standings. He has also built himself a comfortable 41-point advantage on Ironwood, MI’s Paul Suzik in the division’s current standings at Ashland with just four points-paying race nights remaining.
The Mid-Mods did not run here during last Saturday’s visit by the touring IRA sprints.
Truscott will look to win the “Madness” money for the first time in his career, but that can also be said for everyone expected to compete Saturday in this class. None of the previous seven winners of this event are currently active in the Mid-Mods, although past winners Travis Nye, Matt Leer and Steve Stuart are still around, albeit racing in “big Mods” now.
In fact, Ashland’s Stuart is the current points leader in the WISSOTA Modified class at ABC, while Nye – last year’s winner in the Mid-Mod special – is the top “big Mod” rookie here.
Other division points leaders as the final month of the regular season begins include Scott Lawrence of Superior in the WISSOTA Super Stocks, Ashland’s Tyler Hudack in the Six-Cylinders, and Matt Deragon of Ashland in the Pure Stocks.
Hot laps start on Saturday night at 6:15 pm, and the first green flag of the night should fly at around 7. The grandstand and pit gates open at 5 pm, and admission tickets for fans ages 13 & older are just $10, while fans ages 12 and under are welcome in for free when accompanied by a paying adult.
