Kummer Repeats in Red Cedar Speedway Fair Race
Menomonie WI, July 25 – The Dunn County Fair was in session Friday, July 25th and the drivers of the Red Cedar Speedway were the entertainment for the evening. With two makeup feature races to be run left over from last week, it was a full night of racing action and the closest event saw Cody Kummer win his second straight Street Stock feature as he edged out Chris Peterson for the honors. No less than five drivers won their first feature race of the year also.
Kummer won for the second straight week in a battle that went right down to the finish. Danny Richards was the early leader but he faded back as Mike Knudtson and then Kummer took over control. Peterson started in the third row and then moved to second when Sam Fankhauser had a major mechanical issue that put him into the infield. Peterson was working the high side of the track and he was able to pull up beside Kummer.
They ran lap after lap side by side with Peterson edging into the lead a couple of times. With just a couple laps left, Peterson got a little high in turn three and Kummer again took over the lead. Chris gave it one last shot on the final lap, but Kummer hung on for the win. Adam Soltis charged up to make him a close third at the finish with Knudtson and Ron Hanestad next in line.
Rick Hanestad won his first late model feature race of the year after fighting his way past Greg Nippoldt for the lead. Once in front, he stretched his lead to a comfortable margin in a race that ran nonstop. Scott Gilberts drove up into the second place but couldn’t challenge Hanestad with Mike Prochnow, A.J. Diemel and Nippoldt completing the top five.
The make up late model feature was all Prochnow as he started fifth but got up on the cushion and passed Gilberts, Jerry Bloom and Nippoldt in one strong rush, and once in front, he pulled away as again the late models completed their main event without the yellow flag being needed. Nippoldt finished a strong second and was trailed by Diemel, Hanestad and Gilberts.
Hanestad’s son Buddy won the makeup Hornet feature race. After surviving a first lap jingle, he restarted fourth and quickly blew past the leaders and then ran away for the win. He was trailed by Jeremy Johnson, Jess Seim, Dan Prissel and William Voeltz.
Voeltz came back in the Hornet nightcap to win his first feature race of the year at Red Cedar. He started fourth in the main and after getting by leader Prissel, he pulled away to a comfortable lead, only having to deal with lapped traffic late in the race.
He crossed the line with a comfortable margin over Johnson and Hanestad, who got hung up in traffic early trying to get to the front of the field. Prissel and Brad York rounded out the top five.
Jason Forehand made quick work of the biggest super stock field of the year and in doing so, won his first at Red Cedar in 2014. Steve Thomas was the early leader of the race that saw a gaggle of about six cars racing in the lead pack in heavy formation. After Curt Myers and Tom Karis tangled as a part of the huge wad of cars, the yellow waved.
Forehand made perhaps the move of the night on the restart as he went from fourth to first in the restart, finding a hole that he was able to drive through and come storming out the other end as the leader.
Forehand quickly put distance on the field as there was no one able to stay with him. A late yellow when contender Ben Hillman was clipped by lapped traffic triggered the yellow, but Forehand was solid on the restart and drove away once again for the win. Thomas finally kept his car running for the full distance and came home second in the main while Gunnar Watkins thrilled the crowd with his frequent wall banging efforts as he raced up to third after starting seventeenth in the main. Tommy Richards and Luke Plank completed the top five.
Jake Hartung won his first modified feature race of the year after taking advantage of a restart to move past early leader Brent Prochnow. Prochnow took the lead at the start of the event and led the first eight laps. However, on a restart following debris on the track, Hartung got a big start and slid up the track in front of Prochnow taking over the lead. Dave Baxter was having a strong run too and he moved into second with Prochnow chasing.
Hartung built a strong lead as most of the front runners ran the high side of the track. Unfortunately, Baxter got a little too high, smacked the wall and flattened a tire, caushing him to slow and trigger a late yellow.
Hartung took off strong on the restart and drove on for the win with Prochnow settling for second. Mike Anderson made a late race charge to drive up to third with Keith Tourville and Jay Richardson next in line.
Jason Richardson came ever so close to winning his first feature race ever before a late yellow allowed Shane Halopka to pass him and earn his first Red Cedar win of the year. Richardson started on the outside pole and jumped into the early lead. Running strongly, Richardson extended his lead as Nick Koehler and Travis Anderson tried to catch him. Halopka was on the move after starting seventh as he ducked under Anderson and then Koehler and began to close on the leader. Whether he would have caught Richardson became a moot point when the yellow blinked on with ten laps complete after a spin.
On the restart, Richardson got off the bottom just enough to give Halopka a hole and the Greenwood hot shoe took advantage of the opportunity as he ducked under Richardson to take over the lead. Jason stayed close until he was challenged for second by Koehler. They got together racing for the position which opened up the door for Grant Southworth to move into third as Halopka drove home for the win. Anderson rounded out the top five.
Krysta Swearingen and Jesse Bryan both led the pure stock feature before George Richards came hustling up from the fourth row and using the outside line, drove into the lead. Once in front , he held off strong challenges from Mike Knopps and Jeremy Dahl to record his third win of the year at Red Cedar. Bryan faded back to fourth with Kent Harmon chasing him home.
Upcoming on the Red Cedar Speedway schedule are races next Friday, August 1st with Airtec Sports and Dick’s RV the nightly sponsors. Late Models have the night off but all other classes will be racing. The AMSOIL Race of Champions qualifier is slated on August 8th and the first ever appearance of the United States Modified Touring Series (USMTS) is scheduled for Thursday, August 14th.
