Eagle Valley Amsoil Race of Champions Qualifier
on July 14, 2014 at 8:10 amJIM FALLS, WI (July 13, 2014) – Tim’s Automotive and Machine sponsored the 2014 Eagle Valley Speedway WISSOTA Amsoil Race of Champions qualifier. All six classes with the WISSOTA Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks, EVS Pure Stocks, and EVS Hornets were in action. Winners including Mike Anderson, Curt Meyers, Grant Southworth, Jim Randle, George Richards, and Jay Welk. Make up feature winners from June 22 action included Scott Westaby and Todd Roshell.
The WISSOTA Amsoil Race of Champions qualifier is a special event because pursuant to WISSOTA rules, the heats are always lined up on a luck of the draw system, however, beyond opening night and a few select races in the year, the features are usually lined up on a point invert system. Without getting too technical, a point-average system involves a draw for the heat races and the use of a three-week point average for the feature. Your average finish over the last three weeks at that track decides where you start in the feature. If you qualify for the invert, the lowest average finisher starts on the pole and works its way back to the best average finisher. The break down for the inversion is one heat race – five qualify; two heat races – eight qualify; three heat races – nine qualify; four heat races – eight qualify, and five heat races – five qualify.
The WISSOTA Amsoil Race of Champions qualifier allows a luck of the draw for the heats and those that qualify for the normal invert are given a luck of the draw “redraw” starting position. The feature winner is invited to race in the WISSOTA Amsoil Race of Champions feature at the WISSOTA 100. Each WISSOTA track is allowed one such event during the year.
The Modified feature began with the top eight cars redrawing and putting Mike Anderson on the pole, flanked by Scott Duval. Duval fought hard for one lap for the point which was earned by Anderson and from there forward, Anderson drove off into the night winning the 20 lap feature which went caution free. Duval owned the second position for the entire event as Kevin Adams and Jake Hartung had a spirited, several lap battle for third. Hartung eventually beat Adams for the spot and Jay Richardson rounded out the top five. Grant Southworth tried his hand in an A mod, driving Bryan Nayes’ QP and faired quite well, finishing sixth.
The Super Stock feature had the top eight redraw for position and were lead to green by Shane Kisling and Wayne Harris. Kisling took the early lead but a lap two caution for a spinning Matt McEathron reset the field. On the restart, Harris used the high line to take over the lead as Curt Myers began to work under Kisling for second. A spinning Trent Barnhardt drew the caution and reset the field again. Upon the restart, Myers began to challenge Harris for the lead, pulling even in the corners as Harris regained the spot on the straight stretches. Suddenly, on lap 13 of 20, Harris abruptly slowed and he was able to exit the track without a caution. With Myers at the point, he cruised to yet another win at Eagle Valley. Kisling drove home in second, followed by Tommy Richards, Tony Falkner, and James Cimfl in the top five.
The Midwest Modified feature had the top eight redrawing for position with Cole Spacek and Grant Southworth setting the pace. A tight race at the front between Corey Crapser and Spacek provided contact in turn one on the second lap sending Crapser hard into the wall and then the car rolled over drawing the red flag. With Crapser eliminated and Spacek leaving the track, Southworth found himself in the lead. He made a strong run on the high side dominating the race. Shane Halopka was able to secure second and did cut into the lead late into the event but fell short. Brad Seavers had a strong run in third, followed by Nick Koehler and Kent Baxter.
The Street Stock finale redrew eight with Travis Hazelton and Mike Knudtson sharing the front row. Knudtson took the early lead but was hounded by Adam Soltis on the low side of the track. The two seemingly swapped the lead lap after lap when a caution reset the field. On the restart, Soltis lead the field to green and Cody Kummer began to show his presence. Kummer earned second as Jim Randle passed for third. Soon Randle overtook Kummer and set his sights on the lead. With two laps remaining Randle drove under Soltis for the lead and went on to win. Knudtson regained third, followed by Kummer and Danny Richards in fifth.
The Pure Stock June 22 make-up feature pitted Kent Harmon and Pat Smith on the front row. Harmon took the initial lead and Smith spun, relegating Todd Roshell to the rear. Harmon again stayed strong in the lead after the restart however, eventually faded high on the backstretch and was passed by Jesse Bryan. Unfortunately for the field, Roshell was not going to be denied as he worked from the eleventh position to second. With one lap remaining, he roared into the lead on the low side and won after an impressive run. He was followed to the checkers by Bryan, George Richards, Smith, and Tucker Quinn.
The regular night feature was marred with cautions and started with Jay Barnier Jr. on the point with Kent Harman beside him. However Todd Roshell took the early lead from his third starting position as Barnier Jr. chased in second. A caution was thrown for a spinning Nicholas Hazelton-Perry. Upon the restart, Hazelton-Perry spun again, this time Steve Cross was charged for the caution. A short time later, Tucker Quinn lost a tire, sending it into the wall and bouncing and rolling back through the infield. Again on the restart, there was a caution for another spin, this time sending Pat Smith to the rear. Shortly thereafter, the yellow flew again for debris on the track. Upon the restart, Richards raced into second but soon after the red flag flew for a rolling Hazelton-Perry who got upside down after hard contact with the front stretch wall. With tempers flaring in the pits, the race was restarted as Roshell was challenged by Richards, who drew nearly even at the checkers and appeared to take second. However, Roshell was later disqualified and Richards was awarded the win. Kent Harmon finished second with Jesse Bryan, Barnier Jr, and Cody Tisdale filling out the top five.
The Hornet June 22 make-up feature had seven of the original 12 qualifiers. Travis Hoff and Jay Welk led the field to the green with Hoff taking the lead. Soon, there was a three wide battle for second with Scott Westaby, Eric Klemetson, and Jay Welk. Just past halfway, the yellow flag flew when Kelsey Seidler lost a tire. On the restart, Westaby made a low side move for the lead. Although Hoff was able to fight back initially, Westaby secured the spot and pulled away for the win. Hoff, Welk, Heather Rudy, and Chuck Wald followed him home.
The Hornet feature featured Chuck Wald and Shane Lindseth on the front row. Wald drove to the lead but was passed by fifth starting Jay Welk as Travis Hoff and Scott Westaby followed him through. Westaby eventually passed for second and began to chase Welk. Welk’s five car length lead evaporated and with two to go, Westaby had reeled him in. Welk would not be denied however as he raced to the win, followed closely by Westaby as Travis Hoff, Wald, and Heather Rudy filled out the top five.
Racing will resume on Sunday July 20, 2014 as Leinenkugel’s and JP Mechanical will sponsor all six classes in racing action. Once again, there will be a kid’s bike giveaway sponsored by Kelly Oium Well Drilling of Strum and Kris Oium Asphalt Paving of Eleva. One lucky boy and one lucky girl will win a bike!
