Cancer Fundraiser, ‘Meet the Drivers’ Planned for ABC Raceway Saturday

Ashland, WI — As a part of a schedule loaded with special events, Saturday’s program at the ABC Raceway has extra meaning.
Northern Clearing Inc of Ashland will present the “Racing to Finish the Fight Against Cancer” night at the three-eights-mile red-clay oval located south of Ashland, with proceeds from several different fundraiser opportunities earmarked towards a very worthy cause.

The “Relay for Life” chapter for Ashland and Bayfield Counties will be on hand helping to raise money by selling T-shirts and bumper stickers, and all monies raised by the sale of the track’s “split-the-pot” tickets on this night will go toward the overall charity effort. There will be opportunities for incentives made available to fans who purchase and wear the special purple “Racing to Finish the Fight” t-shirts on sale from the “Relay for Life” group at the track.
“All of us have been touched in some way by cancer,” stated Raceway president Kurt Beeksma this week. “This special fundraiser night is a worthwhile way for us to help those who are fighting the good fight to eliminate this dreaded disease.”
Northern Clearing officials have pledged to match every dollar raised by the “split-the-pot” ticket sales up to $1,000. They are also offering a $100 bonus to each of the five feature winners on this night.
In addition, Little Caesar’s Pizza will again host the special pre-race “Meet the Drivers” session, after the event was washed out by wet weather a couple weeks back. Fans young and old alike will be welcomed onto the track to meet their favorite drivers, collect autographs and souvenir photos, and even collect a few treats from the drivers themselves.
A fast, smooth racing surface allowed over 80 racers to show off in front of the fans during last Saturday night’s program, with some of the fastest laps of the season turned. After the visiting Northern Vintage Stockcar Racers competed in their restored racers, Jeff Spacek of Phillips was the run-away winner of the WISSOTA Modified main event, while Superior’s Dave Flynn survived a thrilling WISSOTA Super Stock showdown for his first win here in over two seasons.
Mike Truscott of Chippewa Falls set a new single-lap track record on his way to his second straight WISSOTA Midwest Modified feature win, while Ashland’s Matt Deragon also went two-for-two on the season with the win in the Pure Stock headliner. And Dale Coddington of Hayward held off a late challenge to take the Six-Cylinder A-main win.
The grandstand and pit gates will open at 5 pm on Saturday, with hot laps starting at 6:15, followed by the popular “meet-and-greet” session. The first race of the evening should take to the track at around 7:20 pm. Admission tickets for adults (ages 13 & older) are only $10, while fans ages 12 and under are welcome for free when accompanied by a paying adult.
Prior to Saturday’s race program, “Race Night” will provide up-to-date track news and weather information live on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and online at www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm. The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com.
