IT’S ESTEY ESTEY HANSON BURDICK AND FOLLETT AT AMSOIL SPEEDWAY
on May 31, 2014 at 7:24 amThe Estey family juggernaut continued it’s roll over the northland Friday
night at AMSOIL Speedway as Dad Kelly swept the Modified action and Son
Skeeter swept the Midwest Modifieds. Youngest Son Mack won his heat and
finished second to Skeeter in the feature. The broom was out the entire night
as Kevin Burdick swept the Super Stock action Dustin Follett swept in the
Pure Stocks. Harry Hanson bested the Late Model field winning his first
feature at the speedway in some time.
After preliminary action was in the record book, the Midwest Modified 20
lap main event was first to the finely groomed surface. Dan Kingsley fresh
off a feature win the previous Sunday led early from the pole but the racy
track provided some great racing. A caution flag on the first circuit, the first
of two for a Don Craig spin in the first turn reset the field. The restart saw
Jake Gondik up from the third row to grab the lead from Kingsley but the
fastest movers were Skeeter and Mack Estey up into the top five. Soon
Skeeter was challenging Gondik for the lead and, with seven laps in, Estey
slid past by a whisker. Also on the move was Cody Carlson from the tenth
starting spot to battle with Deven VanHouse for fifth and took the spot just as
the second caution flag flew for a spin just at the half way point. Skeeter
Estey retained the lead at the restart with pressure from Gondik while Mack
Estey was third, Kingsley fourth and Carlson fifth. Skeeter Estey was in
control of the event as Gondik and Mack Estey dueled for second taking the
spot with three laps remaining. Carlson vaulted into fourth as the checkered
flag flew and Kingsley finished fifth. In a rare occurrence, all sixteen cars
that started the race were running at the end.
Next up were the Super Stocks with a field of fifteen to take the green for
20 laps. DJ Keeler broke to the lead from the outside pole with Pat
Heikkinen, Kevin Burdick, Jim Campbell and Willie Johnsen trailing.
Burdick made a run and moved up to battle wheel to wheel with Keeler.
Burdick took over the point with Campbell to second Johnsen third and Tyler
Kintner into the top four. A caution for a Dan Yrjanson spin in turn four with
four laps in realigned the field. The restart saw Burdick take a five car length
lead as Campbell and Keeler fell into a skirmish for second as Kintner
maintained fourth and Johnsen had Nick Oreskovich to contend with.
Yrjanson and Brian Carl tangled in the first turn bringing out the caution flag
number two. At the green Campbell tried to steal the lead but was
unsuccessful. At the ten lap mark Burdick led Campbell, Johnsen a fast
moving Scott Lawrence who had raced his way up from the sixth row to
fourth and Kintner in the top five. As the laps counted down, Lawrence
moved to third and Oreskovich into the top five. Burdick had little trouble
leading the rest of the way to complete his sweep.
The Late Models went twenty-five laps for their main event and outside
pole sitter Harry Hanson swept to the lead and opened up a huge lead. Tim
McMann led the second place contingent that included Terry Lillo, Chris
Olson and Darrell Nelson. Hanson’s lead disappeared when Terry Lillo spun
in turn one nearly collecting son Aaron. The restart saw Hanson again drive
to the lead with McMann following. Nelson made a run to third as Jeff
Provinzino got by Olson to fourth. Another caution flag for a Terry Lillo
Cory Jorgenson incident at the entrance to turn one again destroyed Hanson’s
lead. The caution flag came with seventeen laps remaining and Hanson still
led at the green but Nelson disposed of McMann and set out to track down
the leader. Yet another caution flag for the departure of Kyle Peterlin with
fourteen laps remaining again brought Hanson back to the field. Hanson
accelerated away from Nelson at the restart green flag with Nelson in hot
pursuit. It soon became apparent that Nelson could close up on Hanson
quickly in the turns but Hanson had the edge when it came to straight away
acceleration and speed. This combination enabled Hanson to stay ahead of
the pesky Nelson to the checkered flag. Provinzino and McMann finished
fourth and fifth with Zach Wohlers snapping at their heels in fifth. Wohlers’
drive was a highlight in the competitive feature as he had started fifteenth of
fifteen after falling out of his heat.
The twenty lap Modified feature saw Jody Bellefeuille who was also fresh
off a feature win the previous Sunday take the lead from the front row at the
outset. Rick Rivord showed strength in second ahead of Matt Leer, Brian
Mikkonen and Jeff Broking. Two laps in Mikkonen lost control in turn one
causing the field to be reset. Kelly Estey started seventh and began to make
his presence felt with an early run into the top three. Meanwhile Bellefeuille
had stretched his advantage to nearly a straight away over second place
Rivord. Estey got by Rivord to second and began making serious inroads into
the distance to Bellefeuille. With five laps remaining Estey caught
Bellefeuille and a side by side duel ensued. With three laps remaining Estey
completed the pass and went on to take the win and the sweep. Rivord, Leer
and Deven VanHouse rounded out the top five. Al Uotinen finished the event
in eighth place and increased his consecutive feature laps completed to 830.
The Pure Stocks completed the second night of racing at AMSOIL
Speedway for the season with a fifteen lap main event and it was a caution
filled one. Dustin Follett of Cloquet, MN has found the former Craig Horak
Station Wagon much to his liking as he parlayed his eighth starting spot into
a sweep and his second straight feature win at the speedway. The win gave
him his third feature win of the season. Josh Loucks gave him a run for his
money but fell short at the end. Matt Hammitt, Andy Udeen and Ryan Savoy
finished in the top five.
