Ashland, WI — A little something special is in store for drivers participating in this Saturday night’s stock car racing program at the ABC Raceway.
All drivers who register to race at the three-eighths-mile red-clay oval south of Ashland on Saturday will have their pit admission fee paid for them, complements of the event’s presenting sponsor, the Safari Tavern of Ashland.
The treat is part of the season-long 50th anniversary celebration of the founding of the Ashland-Bayfield County Racing Association, which owns and runs the Raceway facility and organizes its racing events.
“I think you would be hard-pressed to find an opportunity like this at many other tracks for the drivers,” stated Association president Kurt Beeksma recently. “We have the good fortune to have another great sponsor who came on board and has been willing to help support this promotion.
“It’s just as important for us to show our appreciation for the efforts of the drivers who help to make our show great as it is for us to thank the fans, sponsors and other supporters of our track.”
Last weekend’s season opener saw four of the five feature winners claim their victories in convincing fashion, but the level of competition proved that this won’t be a season-long trend.
Ashland’s Kevin Eder put on a clinic in winning the WISSOTA Modified A-main by better than four seconds, while Curt Myers of Cameron and Michael Truscott of Chippewa Falls continued their early-season dominance in the WISSOTA Super Stock and Midwest Modified features, respectively.
Matt Deragon of Ashland proved he was the man to beat in last weekend’s Pure Stock headliner, but in the Six-Cylinder finale Tyler Hudack, also of Ashland, had his hands full before gaining the win.
The grandstand and pit gates will open Saturday at 5 pm, with hot laps following at 6:15, and the first green flag of the night set to fly at about 7 pm. Admission tickets for adults (ages 13 & older) are only $10, while fans ages 12 and under are welcome for free when accompanied by a paying adult. An adult-ticket “punch pass” is also available for only $90, offering admission to ten regular-season shows (excluding the IRA Sprint Car special in late July and Red Clay Classic in September) for the price of nine.
Prior to Saturday’s race program, “Race Night” will provide up-to-date track news and weather information live on WBSZ, 93.3 FM, and online at www.wbszfm.com, from 4:30-6 pm. The ABC Raceway is located 3-1/2 miles south of Ashland on State Highway 13 and one mile west on Butterworth Road. For raceday information call (715) 682-4990, or log on to the track’s website, www.abcraceway.com.
