Eagle Valley May 25, 2014
on May 26, 2014 at 10:42 amJIM FALLS, WI (May 25, 2014) – Coca Cola, Gordy’s County Market, Baxter’s Engines, and Baxter’s Speedshop brought night one of the 2014 Memorial Day Special at Eagle Valley Speedway in front of a possible record crowd. All six classes were in action with the WISSOTA Modifieds, Super Stocks, Midwest Modifieds, Street Stocks, EVS Pure Stocks, and EVS Hornets taking to the track for competition. Feature winners included Kevin Adams, Curt Meyers, Travis Anderson, Danny Richards, George Richards, and Buddy Hanestad.
Ronnie Rihn and Kevin Adams led the Modified feature to the green with Adams taking the lead and never looking back in a race that was slowed once on the initial lap and a second time at about halfway for cautions. It was Adams’ second feature win of the weekend, sandwiching a second place finish at the Rice Lake Speedway the night before. Jesse Glenz raced from his fifth starting position to finish second and Mike Anderson finished a strong third as Jake Miller and Matt Leer rounded out the top five.
Don Muzzy and James Cimfl made up the front row of the Super Stock feature as fifth starting Tommy Richards worked his way to the lead. Richards held a solid point for several laps as eight starting Curt Meyers carved his way to second. As Meyers caught Richards, a several lap battle ensued for the lead. Eventually, Meyers moved to the front passing Richards on the outside running the middle of the track and was able to increase his advantage as laps wound down. Richards came home second, followed by Willie Johnsen, Jim Harris, and Mark Stender.
Fresh off his first heat win of his career, Dylan Goettl held the pole and was flanked by Travis Anderson in the Midwest Modified feature. Anderson took the initial point and led the pack for several laps when he was passed by Josh Smith, who was driving the 7P car. Anderson stayed close as Cory Crapser closed to battle for second. A caution flag reset the field and Smith restarted in the lead with cars side by side behind him. Second place Anderson chose the high side for the restart and immediately it paid off as he challenged Smith on the outside and took the lead with Grant Southworth following him through into second. Anderson went on to win running on the cushion followed home by Southworth. It was Anderson’s second feature win of the weekend after winning at the Red Cedar Speedway two nights earlier. Smith finished third as Shane Halopka and Cory Crapser were scored in the top five.
Kolby Kiehl and Adam Soltis showed the way to the green in the Street Stock feature with Kiehl leading the first lap. Fourth starting Danny Richards raced his way to the lead as a five car battle ensued for the second position. At the halfway point, Richards continued in the front as Kiehl, Soltis, and Mike Knudtson had settled in behind him. A spinning Carolyn Nosser brought out the caution and reset the field, creating a terrific battle for the lead upon the restart between Soltis and Richards. The two fought door to door with Richards taking a very close win at the line. Soltis, Cody Kummer, Mike Knudson, and Kolby Kiehl finished in the top five.
The Pure Stock feature had Pat Smith and Mike Knopps in the front row with Knopps taking the point and leading several laps. Third starting George Richards drove to the lead on the high side and led the remainder of the race. He was followed home by Knopps, an eighth starting Talon Laabs, Todd Roshell, and Terran Spacek.
High school sophomore, Buddy Hanestad made his first appearance of the year at Eagle Valley Speedway count. He swept the nights action having started deep in the field in his heat and fifth in the feature. The Hornet feature came to the green led by Jay Welk and Kasey Gross but Hanestad wasted no time to challenge for the lead. Once at the point, he drove away from the field for his sixth feature win in as many attempts on the season. Scott Westaby finished a strong second over third place Kasey Gross. William Voeltz and Jay Welk rounded out the top five to end the racing action for the first night of the Memorial Day Special.
