Springborn, Yarie and Jach score first wins of the year
on May 18, 2014 at 9:00 amLast week Troy Springborn may have had the fastest car in the late model feature, but had to settle for third. This week was different. Marcus Yarie and Jason Jach also picked up there first wins of the season. Kyle Frederick and Scott Blanke made it two wins in a row on TL Kersten Excavating night at the races.
Derek Jahnke rolled off from the pole position of the Late Model feature and into the lead at the start of the race. Josh Moesch and Todd Frank gave chase early on in the race. By lap five Frank began to receive pressure from Paul Parker and Nick Anvelink. On lap six, Parker passed Frank on the outside, while Anvelink passed Frank on the inside to move into fourth. Parker quickly ran down Moesch and made a high side pass to take second. Jahnke continued to lead on lap seven, but Anvelinks night was over as a mechanical failure sent him to the pits. On lap nine Parker again took to the outside line of the racetrack and took the lead from Jahnke. Meanwhile Troy Springborn moved up to third on the racetrack. With Parker leading, Springborn quickly ran down Jahnke to take second away on lap eleven. Ron Berna and Mitch McGrath also joined the top five at this time. Springborn continued to reel in Parker as the laps wore on and the pair went side by side for the lead on lap seventeen with Springborn taking the lead away. Springborn would pull away at the end and pick up his first win of the year after starting in eighth. The race went wire to wire without a caution flag.
The IMCA Modified feature was next on the docket. Tom Schaal led the first two laps before giving way to sixth place starter Marcus Yarie on lap three. Yarie quickly began to pull away. Last weeks feature winner, Jerry Wilinski, made his way into the second spot on lap eleven dropping Schaal to third. Yarie was untouchable for the rest of the race. Wilinski finished in second, Eddie Muenster took third. Jamie Schmidt started eleventh and finished fourth. The IMCA Modified feature also ran green to checkered without a yellow flag.
In IMCA Stock Car action rookie Trent Nolan moved from outside row number one into the lead on the opening lap. With Nolan continuing to lead, Mike Schmidt moved up to second on lap three. Nolan and Schmidt went side by side on lap five with Nolan still hanging on to the lead. On lap six though Schmidt would gain the upper hand and take the lead from Nolan. Schmidt was quickly joined by Kyle Frederick and Travis VanStraten in the top three. On lap eight Frederick took the top spot from Schmidt exiting turn two. VanStraten followed Frederick past Schmidt. VanStraten continued to pester Frederick by staying right on his back bumper, but Frederick would not be denied of his second win in as many weeks. VanStraten and Schmidt finished second third also for the second week in a row.
In the IMCA Sport Mod feature Jason Jach put last weeks misery behind him by leading the entire feature this week. Last week he led the first sixteen laps before an expired engine put him out of the race. Jach may have led the entire race but the action behind Jach was top notch. Jordan Bartz, Joey Taycher, Lucas Lamberies, Jordan Barkholtz, and Brock Saunders all fought hard for a spot in the top five. Taycher took the second position from Bartz on lap sixteen and began to catch Jach over the final four laps, but it was not enough as Jach drove on to victory lane. Bartz held on to finish third. Saunders made a last lap pass on Lamberies to take fourth.
The Mighty Four feature saw Dalton Nelson in the lead early on with Kasey Gross giving chase. Last weeks winner Scott Blanke raced to the lead on lap five of the race, with an inside pass in turn number two. Gross soon moved into second. Gross stayed with Blanke for the remaining laps of the race, but Blanke carried the momentum from last week to win for the second week in a row.
Beau Schroeder celebrated his birthday with a v8 Spectator Eliminator victory. Brian Welch won the four and six cylinder eliminator race for the second week in a row.
Racing will continue next Saturday night with a 6:30 start time. More information is available online at www.shawanospeedway.net and on Facebook.
