Eagle River Speedway to open May 23rd
on May 1, 2014 at 5:30 pmIt was 40 years ago that Eagle River would bring exciting Dirt Track Stock Car Racing to the area. It was in 1974 that Ken Glembin opened KG Raceway, which is now called Eagle River Speedway. It was 6 yeas ago that the track ownership and management returned to the Glembin Family.
Over the past 40 years, the track has had many changes. From it’s original ¼ mile track, to the 1/3 mile Tri-Oval, Eagle River Speedway will see another major change this year. The races will move from Tuesday Nights to Friday Nights. The first race of the 16-race season will be on May 23rd.
This year Eagle River Speedway will expand to include a Super Truck Division, and on an alternating weekly schedule, also include ABC Six Cylinders. This is in addition to the WISSOTA Sanctioned Midwest Modifieds and Street Stocks, Micro-Sprint 600’s, Pure Stocks, and Junior Sprints.
“The move from Tuesday Nights to Friday Nights is going to bring in new cars, and more excitement for the fans,” stated Ryan Glembin of Eagle River Speedway.
As a WISSOTA Sanctioned track for the Midwest Modifieds and Street Stock, the drivers in those classes will not only be competing for a Track Class Championship in points, but WISSOTA National Points.
Since Eagle River Speedway brought the Micro Sprint 600’s to Northern Wisconsin, those cars have been hitting speeds over 90 MPH. Some of those drivers have advanced out of the Junior Sprint Class, a form of racing for children between the ages of 5 and 12 years old.
The quest for an amazing 4th consecutive WISSOTA Midwest Modified Class Championship will be in the hands of Michigan’s Jesse Aho. The Upper Peninsula driver has taken this class championship in 2011, 2012, and 2013. Aho is joined by fellow Upper Peninsula drivers in repeating as class champions, as Bruce Crossing’s Jordan Kurtti will try to hold his WISSOTA Street Stock title, and Greenland’s Wyatt McIntyre will look to repeat in the Junior Sprints. Rhinelander, Wisconsin’s Jered Cech is the defending Micro Sprint 600 Champion. The Pure Stock Class will have a new champion this year, as the defending high point driver, Eagle River’s “Flying” Ryan Valeria will be racing in the Street Stock class this year.
“Not only will the fans see the best racers in the WISSOTA Sanctioned classes, but this year will have a chance to see the Trucks race, and every other week, see the 6 cylinders! On top of all that, will this be the year that a Micro Sprint 600 will break the 40 year old record of going over 95 MPH?” questioned Glembin.
It will be on July 4th that Eagle River Speedway will host the Auto Value Fireworks Spectacular. The Midwest Modified winner will take home $600.00. Also that night will be a special Micro Sprint 600 race, along with a full slate of racing in all of the classes. The WISSOTA Race of Champions will be on July 25th, and the season finale will be a 2 day special. That will be on August 29th and 30th.
From the May 23rd season opener to that Labor Day Weekend 2-day special, the pits and the stands will open at 5:00 pm, with Hot Laps starting at 7:00 pm, and racing to start at 7:30 pm.
The 40 year tradition of exciting dirt track Stock Car Racing at Eagle River Speedway moves to Friday Nights, and begins on May 23rd.
