Friday, September 23, 2011 – Chilton, Wisconsin ~ Chilton Fall Invitational ~The 12th Annual Chilton Fall Invitational returned to the Calumet County Fairgrounds in Chilton to gather 303 race competitors from around Wisconsin and beyond to the “Largest Race on the Smallest Track in the State.“ Friday night racing action showcased 34 heat races, a 360 Sprint A-Main and All-Star Features in the Late Model and IMCA Modified divisions. Major Sponsors of the weekend’s race included: Mueller’s Sales & Service of Random Lake, the 21 Gun Saloon of Denmark, Pennelopy’s Buffet of Chilton, Larry’s Distributing “Budweiser” of Sheboygan, Best Western- Staton Inn of Chilton and Wild Inc. of Waukesha. Trophies were sponsored by Bob Schneider. Other sponsors included Bernie’s Auto Service of Chilton, Wehrs Machine & Racing Products, Behling Racing Equipment, Jonnys Racing Parts, Five Star Race Bodies, W.C.M. Motorsports and O’Reilly Auto Parts.

In the 360 Sprint division, Scotty Thiel of Sheboygan jumped into the early lead in lap 3 with Plymouth’s Ben Schmidt flying into second two laps later. By lap six, Jeremy Schultz of Beaver Dam pulled behind Schmidt to pressure him for the second spot. As Schmidt and Schultz battled, Thiel charged around the Chilton track putting more room between his car and the competition. With Schmidt running the high side of the track, Schultz pulled down to the inside to chase down the leader. By the half way point in lap 13, Thiel helped secure his lead by putting a lapped car between his and Schmidt’s. Seven laps later, Schmidt broke free from Schultz, made up the distance on the track and passed the lapped car to pressure leader Thiel for the remaining seven laps. But after coming in second in his heat, Thiel would not give up the lead and charged through the checkered flag to win the first A-Main of the Chilton Fall Invitational. Heat winner Schmidt followed in second with Schultz, Tony Wondra of Kewaskum and Kyle Marten of Sheboygan Falls rounding out the top five.

When the Late Model All-Star race hit the track, fans had their favorites picked out. With championship drivers from all over the state lined up in Chilton, the 25-lap special was sure to thrill the crowd. At the drop of the green, Paul Parker of Kaukauna grabbed the top spot with Russ Scheffler of Pewaukee charging after him. Tom Naeyaert of Shawano and Bret Sievert of Mukwonago stuck close to the duo in the front. By lap seven, Scheffler tucked his car to the inside of Parker and the two charged side-by-side through the scoring line with just a bumper separating first and second places. Both drivers charged around the track and a lap later at the line, Scheffler took the lead. With Scheffler now focusing on distancing his car from the field, Sievert made his move to the high side of the track to take over third place from Naeyaert in lap 10. Sievert found his groove and began reeling in second place Parker. By lap 15, leader Scheffler held a strong lead over the field with Sievert and Dan Schlieper of Pewaukee catching up to second place Parker. While Sievert continued his charge on the outside of the track, Schlieper tucked his car to the inside behind Parker. Two laps later, Schlieper made his move and swept into second place and began his hunt for the leader. With five laps to go in lap 20, Schlieper was gaining on the leader but Scheffler maneuvered his car through some lapped traffic and secured the win at the checkered flag. Heat winner Schlieper followed in second with Parker, Gordie Seegert of Oostburg, and Rick Scheffler of Waukesha rounding out the top five Late Model All-Stars.

In IMCA-Modified All-Star racing action, Sean Jerovetz of Sobieski jumped into the early lead holding off Brain Drexler of Oshkosh and Todd Dart of Algoma. As leader Jerovetz began to distance his car out in front, Dart maneuvered passed Drexler to take over second place in lap 18. A lap later, Mitch McGrath of Waukesha shot inside in turn three to take over third. Dart tucked his car to the inside groove and caught up to the back of leader Jerovetz with four laps to go. At the scoring line in lap 22, Jerovetz and Dart raced side by side with only inches separating the lead and second place. Just as the pressure heated up, a caution flag would reline up the field for a green-white-checkered race finish. When the green flag flew for the final time, leader Jerovetz charged into the top spot and never looked back winning the All-Star main event. Dart followed in second with Mitch McGrath, Drexler and Matt Crist of Mineral Point rounding out the top five.

Saturday, September 24, 2011 – Chilton, Wisconsin ~ Chilton Fall Invitational ~
Competitors and fans returned to Chilton on Saturday afternoon for a line-up of 16 B-Main qualifying races and 8 A-Main feature events.
In the Late Model A-Main action, 21 competitors lined up for a fast-action 40 laps with All-Star feature winner Russ Scheffler of Pewaukee charging through some early lap accidents to take the lead in lap three with Jeff Wickersheim of White Lake and Benji LaCrosse of Green Bay on his bumper. Just before a caution in lap five, LaCrosse flew to the high side of the track to move into second place and line up directly behind leader Scheffler in the restart. The field took the green flag again with Scheffler charging out in front again. By lap 10, Scheffler began lapping traffic to make it more difficult to be caught by LaCrosse and now third place contender Tom Naeyaert of Shawano. Six laps later, LaCrosse used the top groove to maneuver around the lapped cars to once again pull in behind the leader. At the halfway point of the race, in lap 20, leader Scheffler began once again lapping the back of the field with LaCrosse, Naeyaert, Bret Sievert of Mukwonago and Turk Letizia of Milwaukee racing in the top five. Ten laps later, the top five battled through a couple more accidents but survived to remain in the top spots. With the lapped traffic removed for the final ten laps, the field was poised directly behind leader Scheffler for the final charge to the checkered flag. Scheffler again focused on distancing his car from the field and created a quarter-track lead over the field to win the Late Model A-Main. Heat winner LaCrosse followed in second with Sievert, heat winners Schlieper and Letizia rounding out the top five. The Behling Racing Equipment Hard Charger award went to Benji LaCrosse of Green Bay for starting ninth and finishing second.

After qualifying through four heat races and two B-Mains, twenty-one competitors lined up for the fast-paced IMCA-Modified A-Main event with heat race transfer Travis Spaulding of Greenville charging to take the top spot in lap three. Heat winner Tim Czarneski of Denmark jumped in second to pressure for the lead with Brian Drexler of Oshkosh on his bumper. Czarneski repeatedly attempted to tuck his car to the inside of leader for laps but Spaulding held him off down the front stretch. Third place Drexler positioned his car behind the top two waiting for an opportunity to advance which came at the half way mark in lap 15. With Czarneski tucked to the inside of the track, Drexler threw his car to the high groove and took over second in lap 16 just before a single caution flag appeared and pulled the leader back within striking distance for the field. Three laps later, Drexler changed race grooves and charged on the inside passing Spaulding for the lead. As Drexler made his move, heat winner Kyle Lentz of Green Bay passed Joe McGrath of Waukesha to take over third. Spaulding readjusted outside to challenge new leader Drexler for the top spot as Lentz pulled side by side with Spaulding to pressure him for second. In lap 20, heat winner Mitch McGrath pulled into fifth. Three laps later, Spaulding beat Lentz to the line to take back the challenge spot with Todd Dart of Algoma charging from sixth into third. Mitch McGrath used the same momentum to move into fourth leaving Joe McGrath battling with Dan Ratajczak of Frog Station for fifth. Drexler smoothly charged through the checkered to win the 2011 IMCA-Modified A-Main. Spaulding followed in second with heat winner Mitch McGrath, Dart and Joe McGrath rounding out the top five. The Behling Racing Equipment Hard Charger award went to Marlin Kracht of Lucerne, Minnesota for starting twentieth and finishing eleventh.

Three heat races and a 20-lap B-Main determined the top twenty challengers lined up in the Sport Mod A-Main. At the drop of the green flag, Mike Joski of Green Bay grabbed the lead with Troy Jerovetz also of Green Bay moving into second by lap three. Jerovetz charged around the Chilton track on the high side to pressure Joski for the top spot. At the line in lap nine, the charge paid off for Jerovetz as he took control of the race with Joski now chasing him down. Just as Jerovetz and Joski began putting distance between their cars and the field, the racing action was halted with a restart in lap 16. When the green flag flew and Jerovetz secured his lead, Eric Arneson of Oconto Falls charged from fifth to second with Travis Cain of Oconto following him into third. Joski held onto fourth with Randy LeMieux of Sturgeon Bay in fifth. With five laps to go, Arneson threw his car to the outside and charged at the leader. At the line in lap 22, Jerovetz and Arneson raced down the front stretch side by side with a bumper keeping Jerovetz in the lead. A lap later, the two dashed past the flag stand with the slight advantage for the lead going to Arneson. When the white flag flew, Arneson had created a little better lead for himself but heat winner Jerovetz charged right after him. But at the checkered flag, Arneson would take the win with Jerovetz coming in a close second. Cain followed in third with Joski and heat winner Brad Theys of Kewaunee rounding out the top five. The Behling Racing Equipment Hard Charger was awarded to feature winner Arneson after starting seventh.

After 46 competitors qualified through five heat races and three B-Mains, the top twenty finishers lined up for the 30-lap Grand National A-Main. With only a single caution in the middle of the racing action, the field charged around the Chilton track uninterrupted for the first fifteen laps with four heat winners in the top five. Tim Thompson of Campbellsport set the pace out in front with heat winners Brian Henry of Omro and Steve Schneider of Chilton in second and third. Steven Ruh of Elkhart Lake took over fourth by lap two with another heat winner Roger Lee of Wind Lake rounding out fifth. B-Main winner Tim Warner of Malone charged on the high side of the track to take over fourth in lap 19. With most of the competitors holding a low line, Warner continued his charge on the extreme outside line, passing Schneider to move into third in lap 23. Schneider charged back and retook third behind Thompson and Henry in lap 28. When the checkered flag flew, Thompson held off Henry to win the 2011 Grand National A-Main event. Schneider held off the advanced of Warner to finish third with Lee following in fifth. The Bernie’s Auto Service / Behling Racing Equipment Hard Charger was awarded to Kenny Richards of Montello after starting in eighteenth and finishing seventh.

Four heat races and two B-Mains qualified twenty-one IMCA Stocks to the A-Main with Harley Simon of Seymour commanding the lead from the green flag and heat winner John Mahlberg of Hilbert taking the challenge spot behind him in lap four. Jesse Colwell of Wrightstown moved into third a lap later with heat winners Tyler Smith of Luxemburg and Charlie Kroll of Forestville racing fourth and fifth. When the race restarted after lap seven, Greg Gretz of Kewaunee jumped into fourth. Two laps later, Gretz continued his charge and moved into third behind leader Simon and second place Mahlberg. As Simon focused on distancing his car from the competition, Mahlberg and Gretz battled back and forth for the next six laps over second. When Gretz secured the position, Simon was out in front by himself. Gretz charged the high side of the track and pulled within striking distance with five laps to go. When the white flag flew, Simon and Gretz raced side by side down the front stretch with Mahlberg battling back into third. On the final lap, Simon was not giving up and charged through the checkered flag to win the IMCA Stock A-Main. Gretz finished second with heat winner Mahlberg, B-Main winner Shawn Wagner of Shawano and Colwell rounding out the top five. The Behling Racing Equipment Hard Charger was awarded to Wagner for starting in fourteenth and finishing fourth.

Forty-four Street Stock competitors charged through five heat races and three B-Main events to qualify to run the A-Main on Saturday night. Heat winner Brian Drexler of Oshkosh charged out in front at the green flag over heat winner Kenny Richards of Montello in second. Dan Gracyalny of Greenville moved into the early third with heat winner Dave Gauger and Ryan Brandes both of Brillion in fourth and fifth. As leader Drexler began lapping traffic in lap seven, Gauger moved into third. Three laps later, Brandes took the spot from Gauger. Just as second place Richards maneuvered through the lap traffic to pull directly behind leader Drexler, a caution flag would pull the lapped traffic out and restart the race. When the green flag flew, Drexler jumped into the lead again with Richards and Brandes chasing him down. George Schwalbach of Menasha moved into fourth with Gauger on his bumper. In the final five lap push, Drexler held a steady lead with Richards being pressured by Brandes for second. At the checkered, Drexler charged through to win the Street Stock A-Main. Richards held off Brandes to finish second with Schwalbach and Edward Anschutz of Kewaunee finishing in the top five. The Behling Racing Equipment Hard Charger award went to Joe Brenner of New Berlin for starting eighteenth and finishing sixth.

After qualifying through three heat races and a B-Main, the IMCA Hobby Stock lined up twenty top finishers for the 25-lap A-Main. Eugene Gregorich Jr of Amherst charged into the lead on lap two with heat winner Brandon Peterson of Sturgeon Bay taking second a lap later. After a couple caution laps, Rob Weachter of Kewaunee moved into third with Bradley Ruh of Elkhart Lake and heat winner Mitch Vandermause of Luzemburg running fourth and fifth. At the line in lap nine, heat winner Tom Brumlic of Denmark took over fifth and moved on to pass Ruh for fourth a lap later. At the half way mark, Matt Junio of Casco moved into the top five as well. Three laps later, Junio passed Brumlic to take over fourth. As Gregorich and Peterson set the pace out in front, Junio continued his charge and pulled alongside Weachter to battle for third in lap 22. Gregorich charged through the checkered flag to win the IMCA Hobby Stock A-Main. Peterson followed in second with Weachter regaining third on the final lap. Junio and Brumlic rounded out the top five. The Behling Racing Equipment Hard Charger went to Dave Schmidt of Algoma for starting eighteenth and finishing sixth.

With the highest division car count of 48 competitors, the 4-cylinders battled through five heat races and three B-Mains to qualify the top 20 into the A-Main. Heat winner Justin Vannieuwenhover of Madison charged into the lead for the first two laps with Todd Booker of Lake Geneva chasing him down. In lap three, Booker and heat winner Stevie LeMay of Milwaukee both passed Vannieuwenhover to take over the top spots. Vannieuwenhover charged back and retook the lead in lap five. Calvin Stueck of Clintonville made his move in lap eight to move into second and begin pressuring for the lead but Vannieuwenhover held him off until a caution flag restarted the field in lap 14. When the green flag flew, LeMay made his charge and took over the top spot with Booker following him into second and Ben Van Wyk of Waldo moving into third. In the final five laps, heat winner Evan Townsend of Elkhorn and Ralph Liegeois Jr. of Oconto moved into the top five. At the checkered flag, LeMay charged through to win the A-Main followed by Booker, Townsend, Van Wyk and Liegeois. The Behling Racing Equipment Hard Charger was awarded to Jason Fairbank of Van Dyne after starting eighteenth and finishing sixth.
