Well, night one is on the books for a track that hasn’t been raced since 2009. For the track prep, I give props. The track stayed smooth with the exception of a rough patch in turn two. I think the track officials need some work though. A good flagman has the support of a good track crew, and I think last night there needed to be some more communication between the flagman and his team. Some cautions were called a bit late, and there were a few bad calls.

One bad call that stands out is when Charlie Kroll tried to drive through Shawn Wagner. Looked like Kroll never lifted going into turn three, and he dailed Wagner pretty good. Too bad that it wasn’t even Wagner’s car. The bad call part of that is while Shawn was down in need of a tire, Charlie wasn’t starting all the way back, as a matter of fact he did make a god run, and won the race. In any case, everybody except the track officials thought he needed to go to the back.

I made a comment on the Wi Dirt Racin Facebook page last night about some of the worst racing. I’m going to stand by that. For the first three classes, apparently is was a demolition. More junk came off the track than winners, and a walk through the pits after the race showed it too, with more than a couple cars still up on stands, missing parts, and in some form of disrepair.

Now to contrast that, there was some good racing too! Mods running side by side, inches apart, even four wide a couple times. On great thing about a small track, it shows off the drivers’ skill to negotiate through the tighter traffic. With the cars always bunched up, there’s always something to pay attention to. This being my first time to the smallest track in the state, I can’t wait until tonight’s races, with a full count feature.

The car counts last night were amazing. With 296 cars at the start of the night, and cars still rolling in throughout the night, I’d expect to see about 320 or so tonight. Though the number may drop off a bit after last night’s damages.

Last night the races started at 6:30. A little bit late on the start time, but that also allowed for the 360 Sprints to take a few laps. The night wrapped up just before 11:00. Not bad for nine classes of racing. Racing starts tonight at 3:00. If you’ve never been to Chilton Raceway, here’s your opportunity. Bundle up and head for the track for some great racing tonight!

And again I will finish this off with a word from my sponsor, RSR Shock Service.
