Didn’t get the call today, so I sat in the stands to root for my favorite driver. At 141 Speedway, the track was smooth, and the weather was great. It started out a tad greasy for the first couple heats, but came around and became tacky and fast! With 101 cars in attendance, and storms brewing off in the distance, this show had to go. Rough driving and overall messy racing was the cause of most of the cautions, and a shortened intermission had to make up for the lost time.
The biggest waste of time was the lack of readiness coming in from the intermission. The stocks came out unorganized, though they should have been lined up before they left the chute. Now having been in the pits, I’ll say that it’s hard to hear the track announcer. Joe has a voice that carries well, unfortunately that doesn’t matter much with the hustle and bustle. And when you, or your neighbors are running engines and impact wrenches, or banging out body panels, it’s hard to catch everything. Ideally, there would be a track official that would come around with a bullhorn to tell everybody what’s going on, however there’s just too much going on to have something like that. So there’s really no good solution to the problem.
One thing I’d like to mention. Looking around, I noticed quite a few people with invisible wristbands. Where do I get one of these? That would at least eliminate the tan lines on my wrist. Ok really, why did I see at least ten people wandering around in the stands without wristbands? You make more money if you make people pay. If they are paying, they need wristbands.
Otherwise, credit is due to Bruce, Joe, and the rest of the 141 Speedway track crew for doing everything they could do to move the show along. The sport fours were cut short of their own accord, caution after caution is never a good way to race. The street stocks moved along pretty well, I believe they got the whole twenty laps in. The mods had to be cut short at ten laps, with a few sprinkles coming on as they started, there was a full on downpour that came up without warning.
Just a note to the drivers, pit crews, track personnel, etc. When you walk across the track, and you see a rock, grab it. Throw it far into the infield, not up to the edge of the track. Somebody was hit by a rock tonight, which is why the ambulance was needed in the concessions area. Parents. Instead of bringing your kids and turning them loose at the track, tie a rope around their waists, tie the other end to a hitching post or something. The EMTs are trying to help someone in need, not babysit your kids.
Until next time, asphalt is to get there, stay dirty!
